What the DAT format is

In machine embroidery, DAT usually identifies a Tajima-compatible stitch file containing needle movements, thread changes, and stop commands. Digitizing applications and embroidery design libraries may create DAT files, and they commonly appear when a design has been exported for Tajima or multi-brand machine compatibility.

The extension is not a universal specification: some embroidery vendors use DAT for proprietary design data. A converter must recognize the specific DAT variant; changing the filename extension to .vp3 does not convert the stitch encoding.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a stitch format associated primarily with Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates and color-change information and can preserve design metadata used by compatible machine software.

VP3 is useful when the target machine or its design-transfer software lists VP3 as a supported input format. It does not improve digitizing quality or recreate details absent from the DAT file; it only represents the existing stitch plan in a different machine format.

How to actually convert DAT to VP3

Using desktop embroidery software

1. Make a backup of the original design.dat file.
2. Open it in embroidery software with Tajima DAT import and VP3 export, such as Embird or a current commercial embroidery digitizing package.
3. Use File → Open and select the DAT file. Confirm that the preview shows the expected design rather than an empty canvas or distorted stitches.
4. Set the target hoop size and machine orientation. Do not resize unless the design remains within the hoop and its stitch density is still suitable.
5. Inspect the stitch count, thread sequence, color stops, trims, jumps, and start/end points. Correct any interpretation errors before exporting.
6. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, select VP3, and save a new file such as design.vp3.
7. Copy the VP3 file to the machine using its supported USB or transfer workflow, then confirm the hoop, rotation, colors, and estimated stitch count on the machine display.

Using the online converter

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Thread colors are often mapped by index or approximated from a palette. Assign the correct thread chart manually if accurate color matching matters.
• Check the VP3 design against the machine’s maximum hoop area. A file can convert successfully but still be unusable if it exceeds the selected hoop or uses an unsupported orientation.
• Review jump stitches, trims, appliqué stops, and dense fills. Different formats and machine interpreters can handle these commands differently.
• Always run a test sew-out on similar fabric and stabilizer. Conversion cannot repair poor original digitizing, excessive density, missing trims, or an incorrect stitch sequence.
