How to convert pdf to png file

A website, presentation editor, image editor, or messaging system may accept PNG images but reject PDF pages. Conversion rasterizes each PDF page into pixels, making it easy to place or preview while removing PDF-specific editing features.

What PDF files contain

PDF (Portable Document Format) preserves a fixed page layout across operating systems and devices. It can contain text, embedded fonts, vector graphics, photographs, links, form fields, annotations, color profiles, and scanned page images.

Businesses, government agencies, publishers, printers, schools, and document-management systems use PDF for invoices, manuals, contracts, forms, reports, and print-ready files. A PDF page is often not an image: its text and line art may remain scalable until the page is rendered to PNG.

What PNG files contain

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster-image format. It stores a fixed pixel grid and supports RGB color, grayscale, indexed color, and alpha transparency, which makes it suitable for screenshots, diagrams, interface assets, and rendered document pages.

Lossless compression preserves rendered pixels, but scanned and photo-heavy pages can create much larger PNG files than JPEG images. A PDF with multiple pages normally produces one image per page, such as page-1.png and page-2.png; a standard PNG file represents one image, not a document page sequence.

Convert PDF pages to PNG

  1. Open the PDF-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com and upload the PDF.
  2. Select PNG output and choose specific pages if page selection is available.
  3. Set the rendering resolution when the option is available. Use about 96–150 PPI for screen display and 300 PPI for print placement at the PDF page's intended physical size.
  4. Start conversion and save the generated PNG files. Multi-page input produces multiple images.

101convert.com can convert the file for free without installing software. Do not upload confidential, regulated, or otherwise sensitive documents unless its handling terms meet your requirements.

For local conversion, Poppler's pdftoppm renderer is available in many Windows, macOS, and Linux package distributions. This command renders every page at 300 PPI:

pdftoppm -png -r 300 input.pdf output

It creates files such as output-1.png. To render pages 2 through 5 only, use:

pdftoppm -png -r 300 -f 2 -l 5 input.pdf output

Adobe Acrobat Pro can export pages through File → Export To → Image → PNG. Configure image resolution or color options in the export settings when Acrobat presents them. For single-page vector artwork, Inkscape can open the PDF page and export a raster image through File → Export.

Resolution, color, and compatibility limits

Pixel dimensions depend on page size and rendering resolution: pixels = page size in points ÷ 72 × PPI. An A4 page at 300 PPI is about 2480 × 3508 pixels, while US Letter is about 2550 × 3300 pixels. Doubling resolution doubles both dimensions and creates roughly four times as many pixels.

PNG preserves the rendered result without further lossy compression, but it does not retain selectable text, hyperlinks, form fields, annotations, layers, or vector scalability. Keep the original PDF when those features, accessibility data, or future editing are required.

PDFs using CMYK, spot colors, overprint, transparency, embedded fonts, or complex vector effects can render differently in different conversion engines. PNG is generally delivered as RGB or RGBA, so print-oriented PDF colors may be converted to RGB and may not match a press workflow. Check a proof when color accuracy matters.

Password-protected PDFs must be opened with the correct password before conversion. Permission settings can also prevent extraction or rendering in some software. For print, verify the image at its final placed size: a 300-PPI render only provides 300 PPI if it is not enlarged after placement.
