Some publishing, printing, and legacy graphics applications require PostScript rather than Microsoft’s compressed Enhanced Metafile format. Converting the file produces a printer-oriented .ps document that can be edited or processed with PostScript tools.
What the EMZ format is
EMZ is a gzip-compressed Enhanced Metafile (EMF). EMF is a Windows vector graphics format used for diagrams, office illustrations, charts, and scalable clipboard or document graphics; Microsoft Office applications commonly create or embed EMZ files when compressing EMF content.
An EMZ file normally contains one EMF stream, so conversion begins by decompressing it. Renaming drawing.emz to drawing.emf does not decompress the data.
What the PS format is
PostScript (PS) is a page-description language used by printers, publishing software, RIPs, and document-processing workflows. It can represent vector paths, text, fills, strokes, and embedded raster images, and it is suitable when a print system or older prepress application specifically requires PostScript.
PS is not the same as EPS: EPS is a restricted, usually single-page PostScript format intended for placement inside other documents, while PS commonly describes complete pages or print jobs.
How to actually convert EMZ to PS
Using 101convert.com
- Open the EMZ-to-PS converter on 101convert.com.
- Select or upload the
.emzfile and choosePSas the output format. - Start the conversion, then download the resulting
.psfile.
This route requires no software installation and is suitable for ordinary, non-sensitive graphics.
Using gzip and Inkscape
For local processing, first decompress the EMZ container. On Linux, macOS, or Windows with a gzip-compatible shell, run:
gzip -dc drawing.emz > drawing.emf
Open the extracted EMF in Inkscape and use File → Save a Copy or File → Export, choosing PostScript and saving as drawing.ps. Inkscape can also be run from a terminal:
inkscape drawing.emf --export-filename=drawing.ps
If the installed Inkscape build does not infer PostScript from the extension, select PostScript explicitly in the export dialog. On Windows, 7-Zip can extract the gzip layer; save the extracted file with an .emf extension before opening it in Inkscape.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion is usually vector-based, but EMF features do not map perfectly to PostScript. Transparent effects, patterned fills, clipping, text metrics, embedded fonts, and Microsoft-specific drawing commands can change or rasterize during export.
Check page size, orientation, line widths, fonts, and clipping in a PostScript viewer or the target RIP. If exact appearance matters, convert text to paths before export where practical, and embed or outline fonts to avoid substitutions. Multi-page content is uncommon in a single EMZ; each EMZ normally converts to one graphic or one page.
