PostScript is still required by some printers, prepress systems, and older desktop-publishing workflows. Converting a WEBP image creates a PostScript file that can be submitted to those systems or included in a production pipeline.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, and generally produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG at comparable visual quality.

Web browsers, website image systems, Android devices, and applications such as Photoshop, GIMP, and ImageMagick can create WEBP files. You commonly encounter them when saving images from websites or exporting graphics for browser use. A WEBP file normally contains a raster image, so its pixels do not become editable vector shapes during conversion.

What the PS format is

PS is the filename extension for a PostScript document, a page-description format used by printers, RIPs, prepress software, and applications such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. PostScript describes page dimensions, positioning, color, text, paths, and embedded raster data through a programming language.

A WEBP converted to PS is usually a raster image placed on a PostScript page, not a vectorized illustration. PS is useful when a printer or production system specifically accepts PostScript, when an existing workflow requires EPS or PS input, or when you need explicit control over page placement and output resolution.

How to actually convert WEBP to PS

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is the most direct desktop command-line option and supports WEBP input and PostScript output through its magick command.

  1. Install ImageMagick with WEBP support enabled.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the image.
  3. Run magick input.webp -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 output.ps.
  4. Replace input.webp and output.ps with the required filenames.

The command flattens transparency onto white and sets a 300-PPI output density. Omit -background white -alpha remove -alpha off if the source has no transparency or if the receiving workflow handles an image mask correctly. Use a density such as 150 PPI for ordinary office output or 600 PPI for high-resolution line artwork, but density cannot add detail that is absent from the WEBP pixels.

To convert every WEBP file in a folder on a Unix-like shell, use for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -density 300 "${f%.webp}.ps"; done.

Using the website converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: select WEBP as the input format, choose PS as the output format, upload the image, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Lossy WEBP compression artifacts remain in the PS output; converting to PostScript does not restore discarded image information. Enlarging a small WEBP can make edges appear soft, even when the PS file reports a high density.

PostScript has no universal transparency behavior across older printers and interpreters. Flattening onto a deliberate background, usually white, avoids unexpected black or opaque areas. For professional color production, define the intended RGB or CMYK workflow and apply an appropriate ICC profile before conversion; simply changing the color-space label does not perform accurate color management.

ImageMagick may refuse PS output on some installations because its security policy disables PostScript handling. An administrator must enable the relevant PS coder in ImageMagick’s policy configuration, and the resulting file should be tested with the target RIP or printer because PostScript interpreters differ in supported language level, image compression, page size, and color features.
