PostScript is still required by some print, publishing, and prepress workflows, while GIF is primarily intended for web images and short animations. Converting the file creates a PostScript document that can be sent to compatible software or devices.
What the GIF format is
GIF is a raster image format created by CompuServe and commonly produced by web browsers, screenshot utilities, image editors, and animation software. It uses lossless LZW compression, indexed color, a maximum of 256 colors per frame, optional transparency, and support for multiple frames with timing information.
GIF files are common for logos, icons, diagrams, simple illustrations, and short web animations. Their limited palette and single-bit transparency make them unsuitable for photographs with smooth color gradients.
What the PS format is
PS is the filename extension for PostScript, a page-description language used by printers, publishing systems, and graphics applications. A PostScript file describes page geometry, text, paths, colors, and embedded raster images through commands that a compatible interpreter renders for output.
PS is useful when a print or prepress workflow specifically requires PostScript. It can define page size, placement, scaling, and resolution independently of the original GIF dimensions, but converting a raster GIF does not make its pixels vector graphics or restore colors discarded by the GIF palette.
How to convert GIF to PS
Using ImageMagick
- Install ImageMagick with PostScript writing support enabled.
- Open a terminal in the folder containing the GIF.
- Convert a single-frame GIF with
magick input.gif output.ps. - For a 300-dpi print-oriented result, use
magick -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 input.gif output.ps. - Check the generated
output.psin Ghostscript, a PostScript viewer, or the target publishing application.
For an animated GIF, convert only the first frame with magick "input.gif[0]" output.ps. To create a multi-page PostScript file from all frames, use magick input.gif output.ps, then verify that the receiving application supports multiple PostScript pages.
If ImageMagick reports that the PS coder is disabled, its security policy is blocking PostScript. Enable only the required write operation in ImageMagick's policy configuration, or use a desktop image editor that offers File → Export or File → Save as with PostScript output.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Upload the GIF, select PS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The output remains a raster image embedded in PostScript, so enlarging it cannot improve detail. Set the density according to the intended physical size: at 300 dpi, a 900 × 600 pixel GIF prints at approximately 3 × 2 inches.
GIF transparency may be rendered as a white or opaque background, depending on the converter and PostScript consumer. Animated frames may become separate pages or only the first frame may be exported. Indexed GIF colors are retained or converted to a PostScript color space; gradients and photographic content may show banding because the source contains at most 256 palette entries.
