What the GIF format is
GIF is a raster format used for logos, icons, screenshots, simple illustrations, and short animations. Each frame uses a palette of up to 256 colors, supports one transparent color index, and is compressed with lossless LZW encoding. Browsers, screen-capture tools, graphics editors, and messaging applications commonly create or export GIF files.
An animated GIF contains multiple frames and display timing. A BMP file normally stores one still image, so conversion requires selecting a frame or creating a separate BMP for each frame.
What the BMP format is
BMP is a raster format associated with Windows and supported by older utilities, desktop software, device drivers, and imaging APIs. It can store indexed-color images and common true-color formats such as 24-bit RGB and 32-bit pixel data.
BMP decoding is relatively simple because common BMP files store pixel data with little or no compression. This suits compatibility testing, pixel-level editing, and software that expects direct raster data. The trade-off is file size: a 24-bit image uses approximately three bytes per pixel before row padding and file-header overhead. Some indexed BMP variants support RLE compression, but this is less broadly applicable than uncompressed BMP.
How to convert a GIF to BMP

Use GIMP
- Open the file with File → Open.
- For an animated GIF, identify the required frame in the Layers panel, hide or remove the other frame layers, or copy the frame into a separate image.
- Choose File → Export As, set a filename ending in
.bmp, and select Export. - Choose the available BMP color-depth option, then confirm with Export.
GIMP is useful when the image must be cropped, resized, edited, or flattened against a specific background before export. Exporting an animation as one BMP saves only the current composite still; export frames individually when all frames are required.
Use ImageMagick
For one still image, run:

Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion cannot restore detail or colors absent from the GIF. A GIF's 256-color palette may produce banding or posterization; saving it as a 24-bit BMP changes the storage format but does not recreate missing color information.
GIF transparency identifies one transparent palette entry. Standard BMP workflows do not provide a consistently portable equivalent, and 32-bit BMP alpha interpretation varies by application. Flatten the image against an explicit background before conversion when the receiving program must display transparency predictably.
Animated content cannot remain animated in a single BMP. Select one frame for a still output or generate a numbered BMP sequence for frame-by-frame processing.
BMP files are usually much larger than GIF files. Choose 24-bit BMP for general compatibility; use 32-bit BMP only when the target software explicitly supports its alpha-channel convention.
