How to convert psd to bmp file

Some Windows applications, embedded systems, and older graphics tools accept BMP but cannot open layered Photoshop documents. Converting produces a flattened raster image that can be shared or imported where a simple bitmap file is required.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native document format. It can preserve layers, masks, text layers, adjustment layers, vector shapes, smart objects, transparency, color profiles, and editable effects.

Photoshop creates PSD files, which are also commonly exchanged by designers, agencies, and print workflows. A PSD stores editable source data rather than only a finished image, so it is usually more complex and larger than a delivery format.

What the BMP format is

BMP, or Windows Bitmap, stores raster pixels in a structure supported by Windows utilities, legacy applications, firmware tools, industrial software, and programming libraries. BMP files are commonly uncompressed, although some variants support limited RLE compression.

BMP can preserve pixel values without JPEG-style lossy compression. Common files use grayscale, indexed color, 24-bit RGB, or 32-bit pixel data. The trade-off is size: an uncompressed BMP is often much larger than a PNG or JPEG with the same dimensions.

  1. Open the PSD with File → Open. GIMP can import many PSD layers, but Photoshop-only effects, smart objects, adjustment layers, and some text features may be rasterized or altered during import.
  2. Use Image → Mode → RGB if necessary, then use Image → Flatten Image to create one bitmap layer.
  3. Choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .bmp, and select Export.
  4. Choose the BMP export settings. Preserve an alpha channel only if the receiving application supports it.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Layers are lost: BMP contains a rendered pixel image, not the PSD's editable layer structure. Retain the PSD for future changes.
  • Transparency is unreliable: many BMP readers support only opaque RGB data. Flatten transparent areas against the intended background when compatibility matters.
  • Color conversion can alter the image: CMYK, Lab, multichannel, 16-bit, and 32-bit PSD content may need conversion to 8-bit RGB or grayscale.
  • ICC profile support varies: BMP applications may ignore embedded color profiles. Convert to the destination color space and check the result in the target program.
  • Pixel dimensions normally remain unchanged: software that ignores resolution metadata uses only the image width and height, so verify both dimensions and physical print size when relevant.
  • Use PNG when BMP is not required: PNG is usually smaller and provides more consistent transparency support. BMP is appropriate when the receiving program specifically requires it.
