What the GIF format is

GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, is a raster format that stores each frame as an indexed image with up to 256 colors. It uses lossless LZW compression, supports one-bit transparency, and can store multiple frames with timing information for animation.

Web browsers, messaging applications, screen-capture tools, and image editors commonly use GIF files. Logos, icons, diagrams, pixel art, and short animations are typical GIF content. A GIF has fixed pixel dimensions, so enlarging it produces blocky edges; its limited palette also makes it unsuitable for most photographs.

What the SVG format is

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based format that describes paths, shapes, text, gradients, and other drawing elements mathematically. Browsers and vector applications can render these elements at different sizes without the resolution loss associated with raster images.

SVG suits logos, icons, diagrams, maps, illustrations, print artwork, and cutting-plotter paths. Its text-based structure can be edited in Inkscape or a text editor, styled with CSS, and embedded in HTML. An SVG can also contain the original GIF as an embedded bitmap; that preserves pixels inside an SVG container but does not make the image scalable or usable as cutting paths.

How to convert a GIF to SVG

For a genuine vector result, use bitmap tracing in a desktop vector editor such as Inkscape:

1. Open the file with File → Open. Animated GIFs are not converted as complete animations by ordinary tracing; select or extract the frame you need.
2. Select the imported bitmap and choose Path → Trace Bitmap.
3. Use Brightness cutoff for black-and-white artwork. For a flat-color logo or illustration, choose Multiple scans → Colors. More scans can preserve more colors, but they also create more paths and nodes.
4. Adjust the threshold, scan count, and cleanup options while checking the preview, then click Apply. Inkscape places the traced paths over the original bitmap.
5. Move the traced artwork away from the GIF or delete the original bitmap. Inspect edges and nodes at high zoom, then use File → Save As and select Plain SVG when compatibility with other programs matters.

For a conversion without installing software, upload the file to 101convert.com and choose SVG. Check the downloaded file afterward: automated conversion may trace the image, preserve the GIF as an embedded bitmap, or process only one animation frame.

To extract a particular frame before tracing, use FFmpeg, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.gif -frames:v 1 frame.png

This extracts the first frame. For another frame, identify its timestamp and add a suitable -ss value before the input file, then trace the resulting PNG in Inkscape.

Quality and compatibility limits

Tracing cannot restore detail removed by GIF palette reduction, small dimensions, or compression. Flat-color artwork with sharp boundaries produces cleaner paths than photographs, gradients, textured illustrations, and anti-aliased screenshots. A photo converted to paths can produce an unnecessarily large, difficult-to-edit SVG with poor visual results.

Use the lowest scan count that preserves the required shapes. Excessive scans can create thousands of nodes, increase file size, and slow rendering. Use Path → Simplify cautiously because it can round corners or remove small details.

Tracing does not automatically preserve GIF animation. Each frame must be converted separately and then assembled with SVG animation, JavaScript, or another application. Browser and vector-editor support for SVG is broad, but cutting machines and older programs may accept only a restricted SVG feature set. Remove unsupported filters and effects, and convert text to paths when the receiving software cannot use fonts or when exact lettering is required.
