How to convert fh to svg file

Legacy Macromedia FreeHand files must be converted when a current browser, design application, or publishing workflow accepts SVG but cannot open FH. SVG also provides a portable vector format for web graphics, editing, sharing, and archiving.

What the FH format is

FH is the native, version-specific document format of Macromedia FreeHand, a discontinued vector-illustration and page-layout application later acquired by Adobe. Common extensions include .fh5, .fh7, .fh8, .fh9, .fh10, and .fh11; the extension generally indicates the FreeHand generation that created the file.

An FH file can contain vector paths, text, fills, strokes, gradients, layers, clipping paths, transparency, and linked or embedded bitmap images. Legacy logos, technical illustrations, print layouts, and archived design projects are typical sources of FH files.

What the SVG format is

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based format supported by web browsers and many vector editors, document systems, cutting machines, and plotters. Paths and shapes remain mathematically scalable, so they do not develop the pixelation associated with raster images when enlarged.

SVG is suitable for responsive graphics, icons, diagrams, and logos. Its XML structure can be inspected or edited, but an SVG may still contain embedded raster images, application-specific metadata, or effects that another program interprets differently.

How to convert FH to SVG

Using the built-in converter on 101convert.com:

  1. Open the FH-to-SVG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the relevant FreeHand file, such as .fh8, .fh10, or .fh11.
  3. Choose SVG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the generated .svg file, then open it in a browser or vector editor to check its appearance.

Keep the original extension when uploading. FH is a family of versioned formats rather than one uniform standard, so a converter may support some FreeHand versions but reject others.

Desktop conversion options

If a compatible FreeHand installation is available, open the file in the version that created it, or in a later FreeHand release that can read it. Check page dimensions, layers, fonts, linked images, clipping paths, gradients, and transparency, then use File → Export, select SVG, and save the result with an .svg extension.

FreeHand is discontinued and may not run on current operating systems. Some older releases of Adobe Illustrator can import certain FreeHand files, but support depends on the FH version and Illustrator release; test the imported artwork before relying on Illustrator for conversion. If FreeHand is unavailable, the 101convert.com workflow avoids installing legacy software.

Quality and compatibility limits

An SVG export is not guaranteed to reproduce every FreeHand feature exactly. Font substitution can change text dimensions and line breaks. If the SVG only needs to preserve appearance, convert text to outlines before export; this prevents font changes but removes normal text editing and accessibility.

Linked bitmap images may be omitted if the source files are unavailable. Embedded bitmaps remain raster content inside the SVG, so converting the container does not make those images resolution-independent. Supply or embed required images and verify their placement after conversion.

Blends, complex gradients, transparency, arrowheads, clipping masks, and older FreeHand effects can render differently in browsers or other editors. Compare the SVG with the original at the intended display size, simplify or expand affected objects when necessary, and retain the original FH file plus a proof PDF or outlined SVG for reference.
