What the DXF format is

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an Autodesk CAD interchange format used to exchange drawing data between AutoCAD and other technical-design applications. A file can contain lines, polylines, arcs, circles, splines, blocks, layers, text, dimensions, hatches, and 3D entities.

AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, and LibreCAD create or open DXF files. They are used for architectural and mechanical drawings, surveying, engineering documentation, CNC preparation, and laser cutting. DXF files may be ASCII or binary, and support varies according to the DXF version and the software that created the file.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format for two-dimensional vector graphics. It describes lines, curves, paths, shapes, text, fills, strokes, groups, transformations, and metadata. Web browsers and many design, office, documentation, plotting, and cutting applications can open SVG files.

SVG geometry remains sharp at different sizes and can be embedded in HTML or edited as vector artwork. It does not preserve the full CAD data model: layers, constraints, paper-space layouts, parametric information, 3D solids, specialized dimensions, and proxy objects may be lost or converted into ordinary paths.

Convert with Inkscape

  1. Make a backup of the original file, then open the DXF in a current version of Inkscape with File → Open. Inkscape uses a DXF import extension and displays import settings when the file is loaded.
  2. Set the import units to the units used by the drawing, such as millimeters or inches. If the DXF does not specify its units reliably, identify a known dimension in the source CAD program before importing.
  3. Import the required model-space geometry. Do not assume that paper-space layouts, viewports, title blocks, or multiple layout tabs will transfer as intended; export the required view from the CAD application first when layout fidelity matters.
  4. Check the imported drawing at high zoom. Confirm that lines, arcs, curves, text, scale, and page boundaries are correct, and delete construction geometry or unwanted layers.
  5. Save with File → Save As and select Plain SVG for the widest compatibility. Choose Inkscape SVG only when Inkscape-specific editing data is needed.

Inkscape is most suitable for 2D geometry that needs light cleanup or vector editing. Its import result depends on the DXF entities and the import options; complex CAD annotations and blocks may require preparation in a CAD application.

Prepare the drawing in CAD software

Hide or remove unwanted layers, select the required model-space view, simplify or explode blocks when the target converter cannot interpret them, and check the drawing units. CAD cleanup usually gives a more predictable result than importing a cluttered drawing directly into a graphics editor.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Verify scale. DXF coordinate values do not always identify whether they represent millimeters, inches, or another unit. Measure a known feature in the SVG and correct the document dimensions or viewBox before production use.
  • Handle 3D data separately. SVG is primarily 2D. A converter may ignore 3D solids, flatten them into an unsuitable projection, or fail to produce useful geometry. Export the required top, front, or side view from CAD before conversion.
  • Expect annotation changes. Dimensions, leaders, hatches, proxy objects, blocks, and specialized entities can be omitted, flattened, or approximated. Text may change position, font, or formatting. Convert text to outlines when consistent appearance matters, but note that outlined text is no longer normally editable as text.
  • Layers may be flattened. Some converters map DXF layers to SVG groups; others combine them into one group or path. Inspect the SVG structure if layer-based editing is required.
  • Check geometry before cutting or plotting. Inspect closed paths, duplicate lines, gaps, open contours, curve fidelity, stroke widths, and unwanted hidden objects. A visually similar SVG is not proof that its paths will generate correct toolpaths.
