A browser, design application, or documentation system may accept SVG but reject Windows Enhanced Metafile files exported from Microsoft Office, Visio, or CAD software. What the EMF format is

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a Windows graphics format built from GDI drawing commands. Microsoft Office, Visio, desktop-publishing software, CAD programs, and Windows printer drivers commonly create it for charts, diagrams, clip art, technical drawings, and copied graphics.

EMF can store lines, Bézier curves, text, fills, clipping regions, and embedded raster images. It is primarily vector-based, but an EMF containing a bitmap is not entirely vector artwork. Rendering can also depend on Windows graphics behavior, EMF+ support, and fonts installed on the computer.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format for two-dimensional graphics. It represents paths, shapes, text, colors, clipping, filters, and sometimes embedded images instead of storing only a fixed pixel grid.

Web browsers, vector editors, documentation systems, and many design applications support SVG. Its geometry scales without pixelation, and the XML can be inspected or edited as source. SVG can support interactivity and animation, but an EMF conversion normally transfers static artwork rather than adding those features.

How to convert EMF to SVG

Using Inkscape

  1. Install Inkscape and open drawing.emf with File → Open. EMF import support and rendering can vary by operating system and Inkscape build.
  2. Inspect the imported drawing for missing text, changed line widths, altered clipping, misplaced images, and incorrect colors or effects.
  3. Choose File → Save As, select SVG or Plain SVG, and save the output as drawing.svg. Choose Plain SVG when the destination does not need Inkscape-specific metadata.

Inkscape is generally the best desktop choice when the converted artwork needs manual correction or further vector editing.

Using LibreOffice Draw

  1. Open drawing.emf in LibreOffice Draw with File → Open.
  2. Check the page size, text, groups, clipping, and embedded images. Draw may import some EMF content as grouped or separately editable objects.
  3. Choose File → Export, select SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics, and export the result as drawing.svg.
