Free online EPS to SVG converter

Print suppliers and legacy design systems often provide logos or illustrations as EPS, while browsers, web editors, and many cutting applications require SVG. Conversion makes the artwork usable in those environments without reducing the quality of genuine vector paths.

What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript-based graphics format for exchanging artwork in print and page-layout workflows. It can contain vector paths, text, clipping paths, embedded bitmap images, and a preview image used by some file managers or older applications.

Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, CAD tools, scientific software, and stock-art libraries may create or distribute EPS files. An EPS requires a PostScript interpreter to render, so current browsers do not display it directly. The preview is not the source artwork and should not be used as a substitute for conversion.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector format used by browsers, UI tools, vector editors, and many vinyl cutters, laser cutters, and CNC applications. It can store paths, shapes, text, gradients, clipping, and raster images in structured markup.

Browsers can display SVG directly, including through an <img> element or inline HTML. SVG is useful for logos, icons, diagrams, and responsive illustrations because vector geometry scales without pixelation. It is not automatically smaller than EPS: detailed paths and embedded images can create large SVG files.

Convert the file

To convert without installing software, upload the EPS file to the EPS-to-SVG converter on 101convert.com, select SVG, run the conversion, and download the result. Open the downloaded file in a browser and in the application that will use it before publishing or sending it to a device.

For local conversion, Inkscape is a practical free option. EPS import depends on Ghostscript, which interprets the PostScript content.

1. Install Inkscape and Ghostscript. On Windows, install Ghostscript before opening EPS files in Inkscape.
2. Open the source with File → Open and select the .eps file.
3. Inspect text, clipping paths, gradients, fills, strokes, and embedded images after import.
4. If exact typography matters and the original font is unavailable, convert the text to paths with Path → Object to Path. Keep the original EPS or editable source because outlined text is no longer editable as characters.
5. Choose File → Save As, select Plain SVG, and save the file with an .svg extension.

Plain SVG omits Inkscape-specific editor metadata and is usually the best output for browsers and devices. Use Inkscape SVG only when the file will continue to be edited in Inkscape.

For batch work, a current Inkscape installation can export a file from the command line:

Ghostscript must be available for EPS import. Test representative files before processing a folder, particularly files from different suppliers or applications.

Quality and compatibility limits

Vector objects normally remain vector objects, but an EPS can also contain a bitmap image; that image remains limited by its original pixel dimensions. EPS artwork may include PostScript operations with no exact SVG equivalent, including spot-color workflows, overprint behavior, PostScript shading functions, device-specific color settings, and effects already flattened for print. A converter may simplify, rasterize, or render these features differently.

SVG is primarily used in RGB display workflows. Check converted brand colors when the EPS used CMYK or spot inks, and do not treat the SVG as a replacement for print-ready separations.

Cutting and engraving software often has limited support for SVG text, CSS styling, transforms, masks, and stroke expansion. Convert required text and strokes to paths, remove hidden objects, and test the SVG in the target device software. Do not remove embedded images unless they are genuinely unnecessary; they may be part of the visible artwork.
