A CAD drawing may need to be edited, arranged for print, or prepared for signage, engraving, or cutting in CorelDRAW, which requires a CDR document for native editing. The usual conversion is to import the DXF into CorelDRAW, verify its geometry and scale, then save the document as CDR.
What the DXF format is
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an Autodesk-developed exchange format for CAD data. AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, CNC software, laser-cutting systems, surveying tools, and engineering applications can create or read it.
A DXF may contain lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, layers, blocks, dimensions, hatches, text, and 3D entities. It is commonly supplied with technical drawings or exported for manufacturing equipment. DXF files can be ASCII or binary, and support for newer entities varies between applications.
What the CDR format is
CDR is CorelDRAW’s native document format. It can store editable vector objects, pages, layers, text, fills, outlines, bitmap content, effects, and document settings. Its main advantage is continued editing in CorelDRAW, including page layout, print preparation, imposition, and sign or engraving workflows that specifically require a CorelDRAW file.
CDR is a proprietary graphics-layout format, not a general CAD exchange format. Saving a DXF as CDR therefore transfers usable drawing geometry but does not preserve all CAD behavior, metadata, or parametric relationships.
How to convert DXF with CorelDRAW
- Open CorelDRAW and choose File → Import, or press
Ctrl+I. - Select the
.dxffile. CorelDRAW’s import options differ by version; choose the correct drawing units and scale when prompted. - Place the imported drawing on the page. If the source file is large or uses a different coordinate system, place it first and adjust the page or artwork after checking a known dimension.
- Inspect the drawing at high zoom. Check missing entities, line placement, closed contours, duplicate geometry, text, hatches, dimensions, layers, and the physical size.
- Keep text as text when it must remain editable. If the recipient only needs outlines, select the text and choose Object → Convert to Curves or press
Ctrl+Q. Save an editable copy before outlining text. - Choose File → Save As, select
CDR - CorelDRAW, choose a compatible CorelDRAW version if the dialog provides that option, and save.
CorelDRAW is the most direct desktop option because it imports DXF and writes a native CDR without an intermediate format. CorelDRAW version, DXF version, entity types, and installed fonts determine how much of the drawing survives.
When the DXF import fails
Open the file in a CAD application such as AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, or LibreCAD and export a simplified 2D DXF. An R12 ASCII DXF containing lines, arcs, circles, and polylines is often more compatible with older graphics software, but exporting to R12 can discard newer entities and spline information.
Another route is to export basic 2D geometry as SVG from a CAD or vector application, then import it into CorelDRAW with File → Import and save as CDR. SVG can retain basic paths and colors, but it may change scale, layers, text, dimensions, hatches, line widths, and object grouping. Inkscape can help with some DXF files, but its DXF support depends on the installed version and extension settings.
Online conversion options
CloudConvert and Convertio are reputable online services for testing DXF conversion to interchange formats such as SVG or PDF. Direct CDR output, when offered by a service, should not be assumed to preserve CorelDRAW pages, layers, text editability, or effects; download the result, open it in CorelDRAW, and save it again as CDR if necessary.
Online conversion is unsuitable for confidential engineering or manufacturing drawings unless the service’s upload retention, deletion, and privacy terms meet the project requirements. A desktop CAD application followed by CorelDRAW avoids uploading the source file.
Quality and compatibility checks
- Verify scale: DXF units may be millimeters, inches, centimeters, or unitless. Measure a known feature in CorelDRAW instead of relying on page appearance.
- Expect loss of CAD behavior: associative dimensions, constraints, blocks, proxy objects, 3D solids, complex hatches, and some splines may be omitted, flattened, or converted into independent curves. CDR does not preserve CAD parametric relationships.
- Check fonts: missing CAD fonts can cause substitutions, altered spacing, or displaced labels. Install the source fonts or convert text to outlines in the source CAD application when text accuracy matters more than editability.
- Prepare manufacturing contours: remove construction lines, duplicate paths, gaps, self-intersections, and unwanted open contours before sending the CDR to a cutter, plotter, or engraver.
- Review line appearance: DXF lineweight and CAD color conventions may not map to CorelDRAW outlines as expected. Assign the required outline widths and colors manually when the file is intended for print or production.
