Free online TIFF to BMP converter

Legacy Windows software, industrial HMIs, and some game pipelines may accept BMP images but reject TIFF files. Conversion also produces a simple single-image bitmap for software that cannot read TIFF compression or multiple pages.

What TIFF files contain

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a flexible raster-image format used for scanned documents, print and publishing assets, photographs, microscopy, and archival image masters. It can store bilevel, grayscale, indexed-color, RGB, CMYK, and high-bit-depth pixel data.

TIFF supports several compression methods, including LZW, ZIP, PackBits, JPEG, and CCITT Group 3 or Group 4 for monochrome scans. Compression is not always lossless: TIFF files using JPEG compression have already lost image data. A TIFF can contain multiple images or pages; some applications also store layers, alpha channels, color profiles, and application-specific metadata in TIFF tags.

What BMP files contain

BMP is a Windows bitmap format built around straightforward pixel data. It is widely accepted by older Windows programs, embedded systems, and software that expects a basic raster image without TIFF-specific compression or page handling.

BMP commonly uses 1-bit monochrome, 4-bit or 8-bit indexed color, 24-bit RGB, or 32-bit pixel data. Most BMP files are uncompressed, although some indexed BMP variants support RLE compression. This makes BMP easy to decode but often much larger than a compressed TIFF of the same image.

Convert a TIFF to BMP

Upload the TIFF to 101convert.com, select BMP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Check a multi-page TIFF before converting: BMP does not contain multiple pages, so each TIFF page must become a separate BMP file. If the conversion interface offers page selection, export the required pages individually.

For local conversion in GIMP, open the TIFF and select the required page when prompted. Use File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .bmp, then confirm the BMP export settings. The exported file contains the visible composite, not separate editable layers.

ImageMagick is useful for scripts and batches. Convert one image with magick input.tif output.bmp. Export all pages from a multi-page TIFF as numbered files with magick input.tif page-%03d.bmp. To convert only the first page, use magick input.tif[0] output.bmp.

Quality and compatibility limits

Use 24-bit RGB BMP unless the receiving application specifies another format. A 1-bit BMP suits black-and-white text scans; 8-bit indexed BMP can reduce size for simple graphics but can alter colors in photographs.

A 16-bit-per-channel TIFF is usually reduced to 8 bits per color channel in a 24-bit or 32-bit BMP, losing tonal precision. CMYK TIFF files must be rendered or converted to RGB because BMP consumers generally expect RGB. Embedded ICC color profiles, EXIF data, scanner metadata, paths, layers, and TIFF-specific tags may be discarded, and some applications ignore BMP resolution metadata.

Although 32-bit BMP can include alpha data, many older BMP readers ignore transparency. For maximum compatibility, flatten transparent areas onto the required background and export a 24-bit BMP. Conversion cannot restore detail lost in a JPEG-compressed TIFF, and it does not reduce pixel dimensions unless resizing is explicitly selected.
