How to convert tiff to jpg file

A website, email system, phone, or image editor may accept JPG while rejecting TIFF, and JPG is usually much smaller for sharing. The conversion applies lossy JPEG compression, so keep the original TIFF when maximum detail, editing flexibility, or archival quality matters.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, commonly identified by .tif or .tiff, is a flexible raster-image format used for scanning, printing, publishing, medical imaging, photography, and archival masters. It can store uncompressed pixels, lossless compression, multiple pages or frames, transparency, and color depths above the 8 bits per channel normally used by JPG. Layered data may be retained by particular applications, but it is not preserved consistently across TIFF software.

Scanners commonly create TIFF files, as do Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, professional camera software, and desktop-publishing applications. TIFF is generally chosen when image fidelity, high resolution, color information, or future editing matters more than compact file size.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, normally uses the .jpg or .jpeg extension. It uses lossy compression designed primarily for continuous-tone photographs and is supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office software, cameras, social platforms, and most upload forms.

JPG files are usually much smaller than equivalent TIFF files because encoding discards some image information. They suit photographs, previews, websites, email attachments, and general sharing. They are less suitable for text-heavy scans, screenshots, line art, repeated editing, or archival masters because compression can produce blocking, ringing, and blurred edges.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the TIFF-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com; it can be used for free without installing software.
  2. Select or upload the TIFF file.
  3. Choose JPG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the JPG, then check its dimensions, colors, transparency handling, and readable detail before deleting or archiving the source TIFF.

Do not upload confidential documents unless the service's handling and retention policies meet your requirements. Keep the original TIFF because converting JPG back to TIFF cannot restore discarded image data.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is useful for local and batch conversion. With ImageMagick 7, convert one file with:

magick input.tif -quality 90 output.jpg

In ImageMagick, -quality 90 is a practical starting point; higher values generally preserve more detail and create larger files, while lower values create smaller files with more artifacts. Do not add -strip unless you want to remove metadata and embedded profiles:

magick input.tif -strip -quality 90 output.jpg

For a TIFF with transparency, JPG requires a solid background. This command places transparent areas on white and converts the image to the sRGB color space:

magick input.tif -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -colorspace sRGB -quality 90 output.jpg

Export every page of a multipage TIFF as a separate JPG:

magick input.tif -quality 90 page-%03d.jpg

Export only the first page:

magick input.tif[0] -quality 90 first-page.jpg

Using desktop image software

In Photoshop, open the TIFF and choose File → Export → Export As, select JPG, set the quality, and export. In GIMP, open the file and choose File → Export As, give the output a .jpg extension, and set JPEG quality in the export dialog. In macOS Preview, open the TIFF and choose File → Export, select JPEG, and adjust the quality slider.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Lossy compression: export from the original TIFF at the required quality instead of repeatedly opening and resaving the JPG.
  • Color: convert CMYK or other unusual TIFF color spaces to sRGB for websites and consumer software. Accurate conversion also depends on the source ICC profile and whether the destination application honors it.
  • Bit depth: typical JPG output is 8 bits per color channel, so converting a 16-bit TIFF discards high-bit-depth data.
  • Transparency: JPG has no alpha channel. Transparent areas must be flattened against a chosen color, commonly white.
  • Multipage files: one JPG stores one image, not multiple TIFF pages. Export pages separately or retain the TIFF; PDF may be more suitable for distributing a multipage document.
  • Sharp edges: use a high JPEG quality or choose PNG when text, diagrams, screenshots, or line art must remain crisp.
  • Metadata: conversion software may preserve or remove EXIF data, copyright fields, and ICC profiles. ImageMagick's -strip option removes them.
