Free online TIFF to AI converter

Adobe Illustrator projects and some print workflows require an .ai document rather than a standalone TIFF. Converting the file can place the raster image inside an AI document, but it does not automatically make the image editable vector artwork.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, identified by .tif or .tiff, is a raster format used for scanned documents, photographs, maps, publishing, and print production. It can store uncompressed or compressed pixel data, multiple color channels, transparency, high bit depths, and application-specific layers or pages.

Scanners and software such as Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP, and document-imaging systems commonly create TIFF files. TIFF is selected when image quality, color information, or archival interchange matters more than a small file size. Because a TIFF stores pixels at a fixed resolution, enlarging it in Illustrator cannot create missing detail.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native graphics format. It stores vector paths, shapes, text, gradients, symbols, artboards, layers, clipping masks, and Illustrator effects. An AI document can also contain linked or embedded raster images such as TIFF files.

Vector objects remain sharp when resized, which makes AI suitable for logos, illustrations, packaging, signs, and artwork edited or delivered through Illustrator-based print workflows. A placed or embedded TIFF remains raster data inside the AI file and keeps the source image's original resolution and pixel limitations.

How to convert a TIFF to AI

Using Adobe Illustrator

1. Open Illustrator and choose File → Open. Select the TIFF. Illustrator places the bitmap in a document or opens it as an image object, depending on the version and file structure.
2. Set the required artboard dimensions with the Artboard tool. Keep the image at its intended physical size; scaling it up reduces its effective resolution.
3. Select the image and choose Embed in the Properties or Control panel when the AI file must contain the TIFF. Leave it linked when the production workflow stores source images separately. A linked image must remain at its expected path or be packaged with the document.
4. Choose File → Save As, select Adobe Illustrator (.ai), choose the required Illustrator version, and enable Create PDF Compatible File when the recipient needs PDF-based previews or compatibility with supported Adobe applications. Save the file.

This procedure creates an AI document containing the original raster image. It does not trace the image or create editable vector paths.

Using image trace for vector artwork

1. Select the placed TIFF and open Window → Image Trace.
2. Choose a suitable preset, such as a black-and-white logo, limited-color artwork, or a high-fidelity photo. Adjust colors, threshold, paths, corners, and noise for the source image.
3. Click Expand to turn the trace into editable vector paths, then inspect and clean up the result before saving as .ai.

Image Trace works best with logos, line art, and artwork containing distinct color regions. Photographs and detailed scans can produce thousands of paths, large files, and inaccurate edges. Recreating a logo or technical drawing manually often gives cleaner vectors than tracing.

Using the 101convert website

You can convert a TIFF on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the file, select AI as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. A basic format conversion generally places or embeds the TIFF as raster content in an AI-compatible document; it should not be assumed to produce editable vector paths. Do not upload confidential scans unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Embedding the TIFF makes the AI file more portable and prevents missing-link errors, but increases its size. Linking keeps the AI smaller and allows the image to be updated separately, but the TIFF must be supplied with the AI or included in a package.

Check the image's effective resolution at its final physical size. The resolution shown at 100% view is less useful than the pixels-per-inch value after scaling. Also verify the required color mode, embedded ICC profile, transparency, bleed, and dimensions for the destination print process.

A CMYK TIFF does not guarantee that every object in the Illustrator document is CMYK. Illustrator text, vector fills, effects, and linked images may use different color settings and require inspection or conversion according to the printer's specification. TIFF features such as layers, multiple pages, unusual compression, alpha channels, and high-bit-depth data may be flattened, altered, or unsupported when imported. Test the saved AI file in the recipient's Illustrator version, and provide the original TIFF when the raster source is required for production.
