How to convert jpg to bmp file

Some legacy Windows applications, industrial devices, and graphics tools accept BMP but reject JPEG files. Converting produces a bitmap copy for editing, device input, or archiving, but the result is usually much larger and cannot restore detail already lost through JPEG compression.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written JPEG, is a lossy raster-image format designed for photographs and images with gradual color changes. Cameras, smartphones, scanners, web browsers, and image editors commonly create or save it. JPEG compression reduces file size by discarding visual information; repeated editing and saving can add blocking, ringing, and other artifacts around edges and text.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a Windows bitmap format that commonly stores pixels without compression, although some BMP variants support lossless run-length encoding. It is supported by Windows graphics APIs, older desktop software, embedded systems, and applications that need predictable, direct access to pixel data.

A BMP can preserve every pixel produced when the JPG is decoded, without applying another lossy compression step. Its main disadvantages are large files and compatibility differences between color depths, compression methods, headers, and optional transparency data.

How to convert a JPG file to BMP

Using Windows Paint

  1. Right-click the JPG and choose Open with → Paint.
  2. Choose File → Save as → BMP picture.
  3. Enter a filename ending in .bmp and click Save.

Paint is suitable for a single image and requires no additional installation. It normally creates a standard bitmap, but check the receiving program's specification if it requires a particular bit depth or BMP variant.

Using ImageMagick

For repeatable or batch conversion, ImageMagick can create a broadly compatible Windows BMP with:

magick input.jpg BMP3:output.bmp

The BMP3: prefix requests the older BMP version commonly accepted by Windows software. On a shell that supports POSIX loops, convert multiple lowercase JPG files with:

for f in *.jpg; do magick "$f" "${f%.jpg}.bmp"; done

In Windows PowerShell, use:

Get-ChildItem *.jpg | ForEach-Object { magick $_.FullName (Join-Path $_.DirectoryName ($_.BaseName + '.bmp')) }

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the JPG, choose BMP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential, personal, or regulated images to a web-based converter.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion does not recover detail discarded when the JPG was created. The BMP contains the pixels obtained by decoding that JPG, so selecting a higher color depth cannot restore original camera or scan data.

A 24-bit BMP stores about 16.7 million colors and is a suitable general-purpose choice for photographs. Some older programs require an 8-bit indexed BMP, monochrome BMP, uncompressed data, or a specific header version; follow the receiving application's documented requirements instead of assuming that every BMP reader accepts every subtype.

An uncompressed 24-bit BMP requires approximately width × height × 3 bytes before row padding and file headers. BMP therefore usually occupies far more space than the source JPG. Conversion may also discard or fail to carry over JPEG metadata, ICC profiles, timestamps, and editing history, so retain the original JPG when those details matter.
