How to convert jpg to ps file

A print system, prepress application, or legacy publishing workflow may require a PostScript file instead of a JPEG. Conversion places the raster image in a .ps page-description file; it does not turn the pixels into editable vector artwork.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written JPEG, is a lossy raster image format designed for photographs and continuous-tone graphics. Digital cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, operating systems, and image editors commonly create or open JPG files.

JPEG compression reduces file size by discarding image detail, with artifacts often most visible around text, sharp edges, and high-contrast patterns. A JPG stores pixels rather than editable paths, text objects, or separate graphic elements; its image dimensions are defined by pixel width and height.

What the PS format is

PS is a PostScript document containing instructions for drawing text, paths, images, and page elements. Printers, prepress systems, raster image processors, Ghostscript, and applications such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign can interpret PostScript.

PostScript can describe page size, object position, scaling, color, and output settings, which suits print production and older publishing workflows. A JPG embedded in a PS file remains a raster image. Conversion neither traces it into vectors nor restores detail already removed by JPEG compression.

How to convert JPG to PS

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com without installing software: select the JPG, choose PS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .ps file. Check the generated file in the application or print workflow that will receive it, because PostScript support and page handling vary.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick provides a practical desktop and command-line method for repeatable conversions.

  1. Install ImageMagick and confirm that the magick command is available.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the JPG.
  3. Run magick -density 300 input.jpg -compress jpeg -quality 92 output.ps.

Replace the filenames with the actual input and output names. The -density 300 setting supplies the intended image resolution used to calculate physical size; it does not add pixels. A 2400 × 3000 pixel image at 300 DPI occupies approximately 8 × 10 inches.

-compress jpeg -quality 92 asks ImageMagick to use JPEG compression for the raster data written into the PostScript file. Omit these options if the receiving workflow requires a different encoding or if you need to avoid another lossy JPEG encoding; the available encodings depend on the ImageMagick build and PostScript writer.

To place the image on a white US Letter page at 300 DPI, use quoted geometry so the shell does not interpret the greater-than sign as redirection:

magick -density 300 input.jpg -resize "2550x3300>" -background white -gravity center -extent 2550x3300 output.ps

Here, 2550 × 3300 pixels represents an 8.5 × 11 inch page at 300 DPI. The -resize operation fits the image inside that canvas without enlarging it, and -extent centers it. Substitute the pixel dimensions for A4 or another page size when required.

Quality and compatibility limits

Choose physical size and density from the source pixel dimensions and the intended print use. Raising the PS density changes the calculated placement or print size; it cannot create additional image detail. Enlarging a small JPG in the conversion command produces a larger but not sharper image.

Keep the original JPG because PS export may decode and re-encode the embedded image, increase file size, or produce a result that differs slightly from the source. Inspect fine text, edges, color, and page placement after conversion.

PS and EPS are different deliverables. If the receiving application specifically requests .eps, create EPS instead: EPS normally includes bounding-box metadata and is intended for placing a graphic inside another document. Many current applications handle PDF more reliably than PS, but PDF is an alternative only when the receiving workflow accepts it.

Color handling also depends on the target workflow. Preserve the source color mode for general use; for commercial printing, establish the required RGB or CMYK profile and rendering intent before conversion, then verify the rasterized or printed output.
