A JPEG may need conversion when a print workflow, PostScript printer, or legacy graphics application accepts PS but not raster image files. The conversion places the JPEG image on a PostScript page; it does not turn the pixels into editable vector artwork.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, usually stored with the .jpg or .jpeg extension, is a lossy raster format designed for photographs and other continuous-tone images. Digital cameras, phones, scanners, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and web browsers commonly create or save JPEG files. Its compression produces small files by discarding image information, so repeated editing and resaving can reduce quality.

What the PS format is

PS is the graphics form of PostScript, a page-description language developed for printers and publishing systems. A PS file describes page dimensions, text, paths, colors, and raster images so a PostScript interpreter can render them for printing or display.

PostScript is useful for print production, older laser printers, typesetting workflows, and applications that require a device-independent page description. It can contain a JPEG as an embedded raster image, but that does not make the image vector-based. EPS is a related PostScript-based format intended mainly for placing individual graphics inside other documents; a regular PS file is generally better suited to complete pages or print jobs.

How to actually convert JPEG to PS

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software:

  1. Open the JPEG-to-PS converter.
  2. Upload the file with the .jpg or .jpeg extension.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for the PS file to be generated.
  4. Download the resulting .ps file and open it in a PostScript viewer or send it to a compatible print workflow.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is suitable for command-line conversion on Windows, macOS, and Linux. After installing it, run:

magick input.jpg output.ps

To set the intended physical resolution to 300 pixels per inch, use:

magick -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 input.jpg output.ps

The pixel dimensions remain unchanged; the density setting changes the physical size assigned to the image on the PostScript page. Replace input.jpg and output.ps with the actual filenames. ImageMagick may require an enabled Ghostscript delegate or a permitted PostScript policy when reading or writing PS files.

For several images, create separate PS files when each image needs independent page handling. Combining multiple images into one document requires page layout settings or a dedicated publishing application rather than a simple single-file conversion.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The output cannot recover detail already removed by JPEG compression. If ImageMagick or another converter recompresses the embedded image, use the original JPEG and avoid repeated conversions. A JPEG's pixel dimensions determine available detail; increasing the PS density does not create additional pixels.

PostScript viewers and printers may render color differently because of device-specific profiles and rasterization settings. Verify page size, orientation, margins, and color mode before production printing. Some modern operating systems disable PostScript processing for security reasons, so a PS file may need Ghostscript, a compatible viewer, or conversion to PDF before it can be opened or printed.
