Free online JPEG to WEBP converter

Some websites, web applications, and content-management systems require .webp images, while others use the format to reduce page-load size. Converting is also useful when a sharing or editing workflow accepts WEBP but not JPEG.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster-image format designed for photographs and complex color gradients. Cameras, phones, scanners, browsers, operating systems, office applications, and image editors such as Adobe Photoshop and GIMP commonly use it.

JPEG does not support transparency. Re-saving an image applies lossy compression again and can reduce detail, especially after multiple editing cycles; simply opening a file does not reduce its quality.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster-image format developed by Google for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animation. A lossy WEBP photograph is often smaller than a JPEG with similar visual quality, while lossless WEBP preserves the exact pixels supplied to the encoder.

WEBP is supported by current major browsers and many current image editors, operating systems, and applications. Older software, publishing systems, and device firmware may still require JPEG or PNG. Converting one JPEG produces a static WEBP; animation requires an animated source and a tool that supports animated WEBP.

Using the online converter

1. Open the JPEG-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or upload the .jpg or .jpeg file.
3. Choose WEBP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .webp file.
5. Open it in the target browser or application to check compatibility, dimensions, orientation, and image quality.

This option runs in a browser and does not require software installation. Do not upload confidential or regulated images unless the service’s handling and retention terms are acceptable; use a local application for sensitive files.

Using desktop software

In GIMP, open the JPEG and choose File → Export As. Enter a filename ending in .webp, select WebP image if GIMP asks for the format, and click Export. In the WebP export dialog, choose lossy compression and adjust quality, or enable lossless output when preserving the decoded pixels matters more than file size.

ImageMagick converts a file locally from a terminal with:

magick input.jpg -quality 82 output.webp

The -quality value controls lossy WebP compression; values around 75–85 are a starting point, not a guarantee. Inspect the result at its intended display size and use a separate output filename so the original remains available. For lossless WebP encoding, ImageMagick commonly accepts:

magick input.jpg -define webp:lossless=true output.webp

Lossless encoding applies to the decoded JPEG pixels. It cannot recover detail that the JPEG’s original lossy compression discarded.

Quality and compatibility limits

Low lossy-quality settings can create ringing around edges, block-like artifacts, and blurred fine texture. A higher setting usually increases the file size, so compare both visual detail and byte size instead of relying on a fixed quality number.

Convert from the original camera file or editing master when possible. A JPEG-to-WEBP conversion cannot restore information lost during earlier JPEG saves, and converting a JPEG to lossless WEBP does not make the source lossless.

Converters differ in their handling of EXIF orientation, GPS coordinates, copyright fields, ICC color profiles, and other metadata. Check the image’s rotation and color appearance after conversion, and preserve the original JPEG when metadata, print production, archival use, or compatibility with older software matters. WEBP is generally intended for screen delivery rather than as a universal replacement for every JPEG workflow.
