A WEBP image is needed when artwork, an icon, or a screenshot stored inside a Windows executable must be used on a website or in an image editor. An EXE is not normally an image, so conversion usually means extracting or capturing its graphic content and then encoding that image as WEBP.

What the EXE format is

.exe is the Windows Portable Executable format for runnable programs, installers, utilities, games, and self-extracting packages. Compilers and development systems such as Visual Studio, MinGW, Delphi, and .NET produce EXE files. A graphics-related EXE may contain icons, cursors, splash screens, interface artwork, or game assets, but the executable itself does not have image dimensions, pixels, or a standard image codec.

What the WEBP format is

.webp is an image format developed by Google that supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Lossy WEBP often produces smaller files than JPEG at similar visual quality, while lossless WEBP can reduce the size of many PNG images. It is suitable for web graphics and is supported by current browsers and image tools, but some older software requires PNG or JPEG instead.

How to convert EXE to WEBP

First determine what the EXE contains. Do not run an untrusted executable merely to obtain an image; scan it with security software and use an isolated environment if its source is uncertain.

  1. Extract embedded files. Make a copy of the EXE, open it with 7-Zip, and inspect its contents. For Windows resources such as icons, cursors, and bitmaps, use Resource Hacker and choose Action → Save [resource] . Save the result as PNG, BMP, or ICO. Some installers and packed applications cannot be opened this way; use the application's documented asset-export function instead.
  2. Convert the extracted image. With ImageMagick installed, run magick input.png -quality 85 output.webp. Replace input.png with the extracted filename. Use magick input.png -define webp:lossless=true output.webp when preserving every pixel matters.
  3. Convert an icon correctly. If the extracted file is an ICO containing several sizes, select the required image before conversion, or use ImageMagick's frame syntax, such as magick icon.ico[0] -quality 90 icon.webp. The selected frame may be only 16×16, 32×32, or another low resolution.
  4. Capture rendered graphics when extraction fails. Run a trusted program in a controlled environment, display the required artwork at its native or intended size, capture it as PNG, crop it, and convert the PNG with the ImageMagick command above. A screenshot cannot recover detail that the program does not render.

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com for supported conversions without installing software, but a normal EXE generally needs its image resources extracted first; renaming program.exe to program.webp does not convert it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting an EXE directly cannot produce a meaningful image because the file contains executable code and structured resources rather than one defined raster. Resource extraction may produce several images, different icon resolutions, or vector data requiring separate rendering. Use lossless WEBP for UI elements, text, or transparent artwork when artifacts are unacceptable; use lossy quality around 80–90 for photographic or complex graphics. Preserve transparency by starting with PNG or another alpha-capable source. If the target application cannot open WEBP, export the extracted image as PNG or JPEG instead.
