A graphics DLL usually contains embedded icons, bitmaps, cursors, or other application resources rather than being an image itself. Converting it to WEBP therefore requires extracting a specific raster resource first, unless a converter can inspect the DLL and choose one automatically.

What the DLL format is

DLL is the filename extension for a Windows dynamic-link library in the Portable Executable (PE) format. Graphics-related DLLs are created by Microsoft Visual Studio, Windows SDK tools, game engines, installer builders, and desktop application developers to package reusable code and resources.

A DLL can contain image resources such as RT_BITMAP, RT_ICON, RT_CURSOR, PNG data, dialog artwork, and UI assets. You encounter these files in application installation folders, Windows system directories, games, printer software, and programs that load their graphics at runtime. The DLL itself has no single image canvas, dimensions, or WEBP-compatible pixel stream.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animation.

WEBP commonly produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. Use it for extracted application artwork, web thumbnails, screenshots, and interface images when the target browser, editor, CMS, or device supports WEBP.

How to actually convert DLL to WEBP

Extract the image resource on Windows

  1. Make a backup of the DLL and do not overwrite the original file.
  2. Open the file in Resource Hacker, then choose Action → Save [Resource] as a binary file after selecting an image under Bitmap, PNG, Icon, or another relevant resource branch.
  3. For an icon containing several sizes, export the required size rather than converting the entire icon group. A 256×256 or larger source gives better WEBP results than a small embedded size.
  4. If Resource Hacker shows no image resources, inspect the DLL with a PE resource viewer. Some applications store graphics in external archives, package files, or compressed data that cannot be recovered as an ordinary image by a generic converter.

Convert the extracted image with ImageMagick

After exporting a supported source such as resource.png or resource.bmp, run:

magick resource.png -quality 85 resource.webp

Use lossless WEBP when the source contains text, flat colors, or transparency that must remain exact:

magick resource.png -define webp:lossless=true resource.webp

For a BMP with transparency or an extracted icon, verify the result with:

magick identify resource.webp

Use the online converter

You can try converting the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the DLL, select WEBP, and download the result. Because a DLL may contain multiple unrelated resources, the service may extract only one image or may reject a library that does not expose a directly supported image resource; extracting the required image first gives predictable results.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A DLL-to-WEBP conversion does not preserve executable code, dialogs, menus, icons as editable vectors, or the library's resource structure. It produces a raster image selected from the DLL.

Lossy WEBP with a quality value around 80–90 is suitable for photographs and textured artwork. Use lossless WEBP for pixel art, UI text, logos, and images with sharp one-pixel edges. Preserve alpha transparency when the extracted resource contains an irregular shape.

Animated WEBP cannot normally be created from a DLL containing separate animation frames without exporting and sequencing those frames. Some older image editors, desktop applications, and device firmware do not support WEBP; PNG is a safer fallback when compatibility matters.
