What the RW2 format is

RW2 is Panasonic’s RAW image format, used by Lumix cameras to store minimally processed sensor data. It preserves exposure latitude, white-balance information, and more tonal detail than a finished JPEG, making it suitable for editing in applications such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, darktable, and RawTherapee.

RW2 files are commonly encountered after copying photographs directly from a Panasonic camera or SD card. They are not ordinary RGB images: a raw processor must interpret the sensor data, apply a color profile and demosaicing, and then export a viewable format.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format designed for web delivery and general digital sharing. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and standard RGB or RGBA images.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than JPEG at comparable visual quality and can preserve transparency when exported with an alpha channel. It is useful for websites, browser-based applications, messaging, and storage where a rendered image is needed instead of editable camera data.

How to convert RW2 to WEBP

Using 101convert.com

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Choose lossy WEBP quality around 80–90 for photographs intended for web use; higher values retain more detail but increase file size.
• Use lossless WEBP when pixel-level preservation matters, but expect larger files than with lossy compression.
• Exporting to WEBP does not preserve the original raw editing latitude. Keep the RW2 as the master file and treat the WEBP as a delivery copy.
• Set the output color profile to sRGB for websites and general sharing. Wide-gamut profiles may appear oversaturated or be interpreted inconsistently by unmanaged software.
• Raw converters may not transfer every camera-specific tag, lens profile, or editing instruction into WEBP. Preserve the original file if metadata or future reprocessing matters.
• Modern browsers and image viewers support WEBP, but older software may require JPEG or PNG instead.
