Free online RW2 to JPEG converter

A phone, browser, office application, or social platform may not open a Panasonic camera’s RW2 file, so a JPEG copy is often needed for sharing, printing, or editing. Keep the RW2 as the original because JPEG is smaller and more compatible but does not retain the full raw data.

What the RW2 format is

RW2 is Panasonic’s proprietary camera raw format, used by many Lumix compact, mirrorless, and bridge cameras. It stores largely unprocessed sensor data together with camera metadata, allowing compatible raw software to adjust white balance, exposure, highlights, shadows, lens corrections, and noise reduction after capture.

RW2 files commonly appear when photographs are copied directly from a Panasonic camera or memory card. Support varies by camera model and software version. Applications that commonly support RW2 include darktable, RawTherapee, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Affinity Photo, and Panasonic’s own imaging software.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a processed, usually 8-bit raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, printers, document editors, and social platforms. Its lossy compression creates much smaller files than raw images, making JPEG suitable for finished photographs, previews, email attachments, websites, and general sharing.

A JPEG contains a rendered image rather than the camera’s full sensor data. Export settings control the balance between detail and file size; later exposure correction, highlight recovery, white-balance changes, and noise reduction are more limited than when editing the original RW2.

Convert with 101convert

This option requires no installed software and is suitable for non-sensitive photographs. Do not upload private images unless the service’s privacy, retention, and file-handling terms are acceptable.

Convert with desktop software

For raw adjustments, use darktable, RawTherapee, Adobe Lightroom, Camera Raw, or another application that supports the specific RW2 camera model. The exact labels vary, but the workflow is the same:

1. Import the RW2 file or its containing folder.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, crop, lens correction, noise reduction, and other raw settings.
3. Use the application’s export or save-as command and select JPEG.
4. Choose the original pixel dimensions unless the destination requires resizing.
5. Select the sRGB color space for browsers, phones, and general sharing.
6. Set JPEG quality to about 90–95% for high-quality output, or 80–90% when a smaller file matters more, then export.

In darktable, import through the lighttable view, edit in darkroom, select the image in lighttable, and use the export panel to choose JPEG, destination, dimensions, color space, and quality. In RawTherapee, open the RW2, make adjustments, add it to the processing queue, choose JPEG output settings, and start processing.

Quality and compatibility caveats

Keep the original RW2 and export the JPEG as a separate copy. Exporting does not necessarily remove all metadata: compatible software may retain selected EXIF, IPTC, or XMP fields, while other fields, maker notes, GPS data, previews, or raw-specific information may be omitted. Check the export metadata options when this information matters.

JPEG compression is lossy, so repeated editing and saving can reduce image quality. Make adjustments from the RW2 and create the final JPEG once. JPEG does not preserve raw editing flexibility, full sensor bit depth, or transparent backgrounds. Use PNG or another format instead when transparency or lossless graphics are required.

Different applications can interpret camera profiles, lens data, and newer RW2 variants differently. If a file will not open, update the raw processor or use Panasonic software that supports the camera model before exporting.
