What the TEXT format is

TEXT usually refers to an unformatted plain-text file such as notes.txt. Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit, Vim, and code editors create these files; logs, configuration files, exported data, and copied notes commonly use them. Plain text stores characters and line breaks, plus an encoding such as UTF-8, but normally contains no fonts, colors, images, or page layout.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, commonly identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a raster image format designed mainly for photographs and continuous-tone graphics. Its lossy compression creates smaller files than many uncompressed image formats, and JPEG is accepted by most websites, messaging applications, document systems, and image viewers. After conversion, letters become colored pixels rather than selectable characters.

Replace input.txt with the source filename. The -size value sets the image width, -pointsize sets the text size, and -quality 92 controls JPEG compression. Use a font installed on your system if DejaVu-Sans is unavailable. This method gives local control over the rendering but may require additional settings for very long files, page breaks, or complex scripts.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Check the source encoding before conversion. UTF-8 generally handles accented characters and non-Latin scripts reliably; an incorrectly decoded source can replace characters before the image is created.
• Use dark text on a light background and a large enough font. JPEG compression can blur small lettering; a quality setting around 90–95 is usually more suitable for text than aggressive compression.
• Long files may need several JPEG pages. A single extremely tall image can be difficult to view, print, or upload.
• The JPEG contains no searchable text, copy-and-paste data, selectable characters, or original line-editing structure. Keep the original TEXT file when those properties matter.
• PNG usually preserves sharp text, screenshots, diagrams, and black-and-white pages better because it uses lossless compression. Use JPEG when the receiving system specifically requires it.
