Convert PTG to JPEG

A website, printer, image editor, or sharing service may require a standard image rather than an editable ArtRage project. Exporting PTG as JPEG creates a smaller, widely supported copy for viewing, publishing, or delivery.

What the PTG format is

PTG is the native painting-document format used by Ambient Design’s ArtRage software. A PTG project can contain painted pixels, layers, canvas dimensions, color information, and other data needed for continued editing. Artists and recipients of ArtRage projects are the main users of this format.

PTG is a proprietary project format, not a standard interchange image. Most general-purpose image viewers and editors cannot open it directly, and renaming .ptg to .jpg does not convert the file. Compatibility can vary between ArtRage releases, so the version that created the project, or a newer version that supports its PTG variant, is the safest choice.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, office applications, print services, and nearly all image editors. Its adjustable lossy compression usually produces a much smaller file than an editable PTG project, making it suitable for finished paintings, previews, email attachments, and web publishing.

JPEG does not preserve ArtRage layers, editable brush strokes, project structure, or all project metadata. It also has no transparency channel; transparent areas must be flattened against a background during export.

How to convert PTG to JPEG

Use ArtRage for the conversion. General-purpose editors such as GIMP, Krita, and Photoshop should not be expected to open native PTG files directly.

1. Open the project in ArtRage with File → Open.
2. Select the .ptg file and allow the complete canvas and layers to load.
3. Adjust layer visibility, blend modes, canvas dimensions, and the background before exporting. JPEG represents the visible composite, not the individual layers.
4. Choose File → Export Image File.
5. Choose JPEG in the export dialog, set a destination and a filename ending in .jpg or .jpeg, then confirm.
6. Choose a high quality setting for printing or a general-purpose viewing copy. Use lower quality only when reducing file size matters more than preserving fine brushwork.

Use ArtRage’s export command rather than File → Save; normal saving keeps the editable project in PTG format. Preserve the original PTG separately if the artwork may need further editing.

Online converters and alternatives

There is no widely supported, dependable online converter for native ArtRage PTG projects. Services that accept JPEG, PNG, or other common images may reject PTG, and uploading unpublished artwork transfers it to a third party. If ArtRage is unavailable, ask the creator to export a JPEG or PNG, or install a compatible ArtRage version. A screenshot should be used only as a last resort because it may capture the wrong dimensions, interface elements, or reduced display quality.

Quality and compatibility limits

JPEG compression is lossy. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG can create block artifacts, soften fine brushwork, and alter colors, so export once from the original PTG at the required pixel dimensions instead of recompressing an existing JPEG.

Choose PNG when the receiving application accepts it and the artwork contains sharp linework, text, flat colors, or transparency. PNG preserves image data without JPEG’s lossy artifacts, but its files may be larger. For broad compatibility and smaller files, JPEG is appropriate after the PTG has been flattened.
