Free online ORF to JPEG converter

Websites, basic image editors, and many devices do not accept Olympus camera raw files, so photographs may need conversion before uploading or sharing. JPEG creates a smaller, broadly compatible copy while leaving the original ORF available for future editing.

What the ORF format is

ORF (Olympus Raw Image File) is the raw format used by many Olympus and OM System cameras. It stores largely unrendered sensor data with camera metadata, allowing exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, shadows, color, noise reduction, and other settings to be adjusted before the image is rendered.

ORF files are produced when a compatible camera is set to a raw capture mode. They can be opened by OM Workspace (formerly Olympus Workspace), Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable, RawTherapee, and other applications with a suitable camera-specific raw decoder. Support can depend on the camera model and the software version.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, office software, photo viewers, printers, and most image editors. Its smaller files and broad compatibility make it suitable for websites, email, messaging, general viewing, and many printing workflows.

JPEG uses lossy compression. Exporting an ORF renders the raw data into a finished image and discards the original sensor data and some editing flexibility. Changing .orf to .jpg does not perform this conversion.

How to convert ORF files

Using OM Workspace

1. Install and open OM Workspace, then browse to or import the ORF files.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, crop, noise reduction, sharpening, and other raw settings if needed.
3. Select one or more images and open the JPEG export command, usually through File → Export.
4. Choose JPEG, select the destination folder, and set the output dimensions, color profile, and quality.
5. Start the export and verify the resulting files in the destination folder.

Menu names can vary between OM Workspace releases. For ordinary sharing, use a high-quality JPEG setting; in software with a 0–100 scale, values around 80–90 usually reduce file size while retaining good visual quality. Use a higher setting when the file will be edited again or printed, but inspect the result because quality scales are application-specific.

Using a raw editor

RawTherapee and darktable can develop ORF files and export JPEG without changing the original. Open the ORF, make the required raw adjustments, select the image for processing or export, choose JPEG, set the quality and output directory, and start the export. In Lightroom, use File → Export, select JPEG, choose the destination and quality, and export the selected photographs.

Converting without installing software

Online conversion sends the photograph to a remote service, so do not use it for confidential images unless the service's storage, processing, and deletion terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility considerations

• Keep the original ORF as the archival master. Exporting to JPEG permanently removes raw sensor data, and repeatedly saving a JPEG can add compression artifacts.
• Use the sRGB color profile for websites, phones, and general sharing. Use Adobe RGB or another wide-gamut profile only when every application and printing device in the workflow supports it; unmanaged software may display the colors incorrectly.
• Preserve the original pixel dimensions for maximum cropping and print flexibility. Reducing dimensions lowers file size but also reduces available detail and print size.
• Check the exported image's orientation, dimensions, color, and metadata. Export settings determine whether camera metadata, location data, and editing information are retained or removed.
• JPEG cannot retain the full dynamic range or the complete set of raw adjustments available in the ORF. Make exposure and white-balance decisions before export.
