Websites, messaging apps, printers, and basic image editors commonly require JPEG rather than Hasselblad’s RAW format. Converting a .3FR file creates a smaller, widely compatible image, but renders the original sensor data into a finished JPEG.

What the 3FR format is

3FR is Hasselblad’s proprietary RAW image format, used by Hasselblad digital cameras and digital backs. It stores largely unprocessed sensor data with exposure and camera metadata, allowing white balance, exposure, highlight recovery, sharpening, and noise reduction to be adjusted during RAW development. Hasselblad Phocus is the native application; Lightroom Classic, Adobe Camera Raw, and some other RAW processors support compatible 3FR files.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, office software, social platforms, printers, and most photo viewers. Its lossy compression produces much smaller files than RAW, making JPEG suitable for sharing, web publishing, standard printing, and general editing. A JPEG does not retain the original sensor data or the full adjustment latitude of the 3FR file.

How to convert 3FR files to JPEG

Using Hasselblad Phocus

1. Install and open Hasselblad Phocus.
2. Import the .3FR file or open the folder containing it.
3. Adjust exposure, white balance, crop, color, noise reduction, and sharpening as required.
4. Select the image or images and open Phocus’s export command, such as File → Export.
5. Choose JPEG, set the quality, color profile, pixel dimensions, destination folder, and file naming options.
6. Start the export. Phocus creates new .jpg files and leaves the original .3FR files unchanged.

Phocus is the safest choice for Hasselblad-specific RAW rendering, camera profiles, and batches of files. It is available from Hasselblad without a paid Adobe subscription.

Using Lightroom Classic or Adobe Camera Raw

1. Import the 3FR file into Lightroom Classic, or open it through Adobe Camera Raw in a compatible Adobe application.
2. Apply the required RAW adjustments before rendering the image.
3. In Lightroom Classic, choose File → Export. In Camera Raw, use Save Image.
4. Set the format to JPEG, choose the quality and color space, specify pixel dimensions and output location, then export or save the file.

RAW support can vary by camera model and software version. If a current Adobe application does not open the file correctly, use the latest Hasselblad software or convert through Phocus.

Repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG can add further compression loss, so keep the 3FR as the archival original and create separate JPEG copies for distribution.

Some converters may not support every 3FR variant, camera profile, or embedded preview. Phocus generally provides the most complete Hasselblad-specific interpretation; inspect the exported image for color, exposure, orientation, and metadata before deleting or sharing the source.
