Convert AAE to JPEG

Websites, older devices, and Windows applications may reject an .AAE file copied from an iPhone or iPad when they require a JPEG image. The required operation is to export the associated photo as JPEG; an AAE file by itself cannot supply the image pixels.

What the AAE format is

AAE is an Apple sidecar format used primarily by Photos on iPhone and iPad. It is an XML file containing non-destructive adjustment instructions, such as crops, rotations, filters, and exposure changes, for a separate photo. It is not an image and cannot be opened as one.

An AAE file normally accompanies a matching .HEIC, .JPG, or .JPEG file after a transfer through USB, Finder, Windows File Explorer, or a sharing service. The original photo and its sidecar must remain available to software that can interpret the adjustments. macOS Photos generally stores adjustments inside its library, so loose AAE files are most often encountered when photos are copied out of an Apple library.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a widely supported, lossy raster-image format accepted by browsers, email applications, office software, print services, and older hardware. Its compressed files are usually much smaller than uncompressed formats, although HEIC can be smaller at comparable visual quality.

Exporting to JPEG renders the current appearance into image pixels. It does not preserve the AAE instructions as editable operations, and JPEG compression can reduce detail or introduce artifacts.

How to export the image as JPEG

Using Apple Photos on a Mac

1. Keep the original image and its AAE sidecar together, or make sure the photo is available in iCloud Photos.
2. Open Photos and select the edited photo. If you have loose files, import the matching image and sidecar together when possible, then verify that the adjustments appear in the preview.
3. Choose File → Export → Export 1 Photo.
4. Set Photo Kind to JPEG, select the desired quality and full-size or reduced-size option, and click Export.

If the adjustments do not appear after importing loose files, export the image from the original iPhone, iPad, or synchronized Photos library instead. A generic image viewer cannot apply AAE instructions.

From an iPhone or iPad

1. Open the edited image in Photos and tap Share.
2. Choose Save to Files, AirDrop, or another transfer destination that exports the rendered photo. If a sharing option offers Most Compatible, select it to request JPEG instead of HEIC.
3. Open the resulting file and confirm that its extension is .jpg or .jpeg before uploading or sharing it.

For a large library, sync it with iCloud Photos and download or export the edited version from Photos on a Mac. On Windows, iCloud Photos or iCloud.com Photos can provide the synchronized image; choose a JPEG download or export option when offered and check that the downloaded file contains the visible edits.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar can convert the associated HEIC or another image file to JPEG, but they cannot meaningfully convert an AAE file and normally cannot apply edits stored only in that sidecar. Upload the source image, not the AAE, and use an online service only when its retention and deletion terms are suitable for the photo.

Quality and compatibility limits

• An AAE file alone is not recoverable as a photo. Locate the matching original in the device, Photos library, iCloud Photos, a backup, or the original transfer.
• Renaming photo.AAE to photo.JPG does not convert it; the renamed file remains XML metadata.
• Choose maximum quality and full-size output for printing or additional editing. JPEG export applies the adjustments permanently and adds lossy compression.
• Keep the original HEIC or JPEG and AAE file until the exported JPEG has been checked. The JPEG usually cannot restore the original image or its non-destructive editing state.
