What the JPX format is

JPX is the file format defined by JPEG 2000 Part 2 (ISO/IEC 15444-2), an extended JPEG 2000 format. It can contain tiled or very large images, multiple image components, high-bit-depth data, transparency information, advanced color data, and image sequences. These capabilities are used in medical imaging, geographic information systems, digital archives, publishing, document processing, and other professional imaging workflows.

JPX files are usually produced by specialized JPEG 2000 software rather than consumer cameras. A .jpg-compatible application may not include a JPEG 2000 decoder, and software that opens JPX may not preserve every feature in the file.

JPEG, commonly identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a widely supported raster-image format for photographs and continuous-tone graphics. Conventional JPEG uses lossy compression to reduce file size by discarding some image detail.

JPEG opens in web browsers, operating systems, office applications, photo editors, printers, cameras, and most upload systems. It is a suitable target when compatibility and compact files matter more than JPX-specific features, high bit depth, or lossless image data. The .jpg and .jpeg extensions represent the same format.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting to conventional JPEG decodes the JPX image and recompresses it with a different codec. This is normally a lossy operation, even when the source JPX used lossless compression. Blocking, ringing, and loss of fine texture become more visible at lower quality settings or after repeated JPEG saves. Retain the original JPX as the archival master.

JPEG does not preserve JPX transparency, arbitrary image sequences, multiple components, or all high-bit-depth and specialized color information. Transparent pixels are normally composited against a background, often white, and a multi-image or layered source may be reduced to one rendered image. Inspect the result when scientific, medical, archival, or print color accuracy matters.
