What the SRW format is

SRW is Samsung's RAW image format, used by several Samsung digital cameras and mirrorless models. It stores minimally processed sensor data and camera metadata, including exposure and white-balance information, rather than a finished image. RAW data preserves more scope for recovering highlights, adjusting exposure, and changing white balance than an already rendered JPEG.

Applications that may open SRW files include Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, darktable, RawTherapee, digiKam, and some Samsung camera software. Support depends on the camera model and the application's RAW library, so an older program may not recognize a newer or less common SRW variant.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is an 8-bit compressed raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office applications, social networks, photo labs, and most image viewers. Its smaller files are suitable for email, uploads, quick sharing, and finished images that no longer need RAW adjustments.

JPEG compression is normally lossy. Lower quality settings discard more detail and can produce blockiness, ringing, or smearing around fine textures. A JPEG is a rendered image, so it cannot preserve the full exposure and white-balance flexibility of the SRW source. Renaming .srw to .jpg does not convert the image.

How to convert SRW files to JPEG

• Keep the SRW originals as the archival and re-editable source. Exporting to JPEG permanently discards RAW data and some camera-specific settings.
• Use sRGB when the JPEG may be viewed in unspecified software or sent to a general printer. Adobe RGB can retain a wider editing gamut, but applications that ignore embedded color profiles may display its colors incorrectly.
• Export at full resolution for printing and cropping. Resize for a defined purpose rather than as part of every conversion.
• Make adjustments from the SRW file and export the final JPEG once. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG applies additional lossy compression.
• If a file is rejected or opens incorrectly, update the RAW application or try another current RAW processor. RAW compatibility is model-dependent, and a JPEG export may not reproduce proprietary picture styles or in-camera processing exactly.
