Free online PEF to JPEG converter

Many websites, phones, office applications, and printers accept JPEG but cannot open Pentax RAW files. Exporting a PEF as JPEG creates a shareable, smaller copy while leaving the original file available for later RAW editing.

What the PEF format is

PEF usually means Pentax Electronic File, Pentax’s proprietary RAW format. Pentax DSLR and mirrorless cameras can save PEF files when RAW or RAW+JPEG capture is selected.

A PEF stores mostly unprocessed sensor data together with metadata such as exposure, lens, and white-balance information. A RAW processor must demosaic the data and render its colors, tone, sharpening, and noise reduction before producing a normal viewable image. The file may also contain a camera-generated preview.

PEF is used primarily by Pentax photographers who want more control over exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, and color than an in-camera JPEG provides. Applications with PEF support include RawTherapee, darktable, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Capture One, digiKam, and Pentax imaging software; support can vary by camera model and software version.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office software, social platforms, and most printers. It normally stores an 8-bit-per-channel image with lossy compression, making it much smaller and more widely compatible than a RAW file.

JPEG is appropriate for uploading, emailing, displaying, and printing when the recipient does not use RAW-processing software. Select sRGB for general web and device compatibility. JPEG does not preserve the original sensor data, and repeatedly opening and resaving it can introduce additional compression loss, so it should normally be treated as a delivery copy rather than an archival master.

Convert with RawTherapee

1. Install a current version of RawTherapee and open the folder containing the .PEF files.
2. Select one or more images in the file browser.
3. Adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, sharpening, or noise reduction if necessary. These edits are applied during export and do not alter the original PEF.
4. Use the output or batch-processing controls to select JPEG, an output folder, and the desired image dimensions.
5. Set the output color profile to sRGB for ordinary web and device use, choose a JPEG quality around 90–95, add the images to the processing queue, and start the export.

The output normally keeps the source filename, changing an input such as DSC_1234.PEF to DSC_1234.jpg. Keep the PEF files if you may later need to change the RAW interpretation.

Convert with darktable

1. Import the files through Lighttable → Import.
2. Open an image in the darkroom and apply any required RAW adjustments.
3. In Lighttable, select one or more images and open the export controls.
4. Choose JPEG as the file format, set quality to about 90–95, select sRGB as the output color profile, and specify the destination folder.
5. Click Export.

For a quick export, the default RAW interpretation can be used without manual adjustments. Check the preview first because the application’s exposure and white-balance rendering may differ from the preview embedded by the camera.

Quality and compatibility limits

• This is not an extension rename: RAW data must be rendered, and the selected exposure, white balance, demosaicing, sharpening, noise reduction, and color profile determine the JPEG result.
• A quality setting of 90–95 usually provides a practical balance between visual quality and file size. It cannot restore detail already discarded by the PEF-to-JPEG rendering process.
• Export at the camera’s full pixel dimensions unless the destination requires resizing. Reducing dimensions permanently removes image detail from the JPEG.
• Embed an sRGB profile for general compatibility. Adobe RGB or another wide-gamut profile can look muted in applications that ignore color-management metadata.
• JPEG has less dynamic range and editing flexibility than the source PEF. Preserve the PEF as the master when future exposure or white-balance changes may be needed.
• Older software may not recognize PEF variants from newer Pentax cameras. Update the RAW processor or use software whose supported camera list includes the specific model.
