Free online ICO to JPEG converter

A document portal, photo editor, or device may accept JPEG uploads but reject Windows .ico files. Converting creates one standard raster image that can be placed in documents, shared, or edited outside icon-specific software.

What ICO files contain

ICO is a container format used primarily by Windows for application, shortcut, folder, and executable-resource icons. It is also used for some website favicons. A single .ico file can hold several versions of an icon at different dimensions and color depths, such as 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, and 256×256 pixels.

Modern ICO entries can contain PNG-compressed images with alpha transparency; older entries use bitmap data and a transparency mask. Converting an ICO normally exports only one of those embedded icon images, not the entire multi-size container.

What JPEG provides

JPEG, stored as .jpg or .jpeg, is a lossy raster-image format supported by browsers, office applications, phones, printers, and common image editors. Each JPEG file contains one image and uses compression that is effective for photographs, gradients, and full-color artwork.

JPEG has no transparency support. It is often less suitable than PNG for small icons, text, hard edges, and flat-color graphics because compression can introduce visible artifacts.

Convert the file

On 101convert.com, upload the .ico file, select JPEG as the output format, start conversion, and download the resulting .jpg file. No software installation is required.

If the ICO contains several sizes, use the largest available source image when the conversion interface offers a frame or size choice. A 256×256 icon entry usually produces the most usable JPEG; enlarging a 16×16 or 32×32 entry cannot restore missing detail.

For local conversion on Windows, open the file in IrfanView, choose the required icon image if prompted, then use File → Save As and select JPG - JPEG Files. Set the JPEG quality in the save dialog. GIMP can also import ICO layers: select the required layer, then use File → Export As and save as icon.jpg.

With ImageMagick, first list the ICO images and their dimensions:

Use the index reported for the required image, composite transparency onto white, and write JPEG:

Replace [3] with the index of the selected frame. Do not assume [0] is the largest image; ICO frame order is not fixed.

Quality and compatibility limits

Choose the replacement background before export because transparent ICO pixels must become opaque in JPEG. White is common, but a colored background may be necessary if the icon was designed for a specific interface.

Use JPEG quality around 90–95 when preserving a reasonably clean preview matters. Lower settings reduce file size but can cause block artifacts and halos around icon edges, lettering, and high-contrast shapes.

Use PNG instead if the result must retain transparency, remain sharp at pixel level, or be used again as an application or favicon image. JPEG output cannot replace an ICO file where software specifically requires the multi-size icon container.
