Programs, document tools, and upload forms that do not accept Windows icon containers often require a standard image file instead. Converting to PNG also provides one editable, shareable image from an ICO file that may contain several sizes.

What the ICO format is

ICO is a Windows icon container used for application icons, shortcuts, folders, and website favicons. A single file can contain multiple raster images at different dimensions, commonly 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, and 256×256 pixels. Entries may use bitmap data or compressed PNG data; 32-bit entries can include an alpha channel, although older files may use only a 1-bit transparency mask.

ICO files are created by Windows development tools, icon editors, favicon tools, and graphics programs. They commonly appear as application resources, website files named favicon.ico, and interface assets. Because the container can hold several images, conversion may require selecting the embedded size to export.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office software, graphics editors, and publishing tools. It supports alpha transparency and preserves sharp edges well for icons, logos, interface elements, and screenshots.

PNG stores one image per file, so it does not retain the other sizes or ICO-specific container data. Export each required ICO entry separately if multiple resolutions are needed.

How to convert ICO to PNG

Using ImageMagick

Install ImageMagick from your operating system’s package source, then inspect the entries with:

Use the reported scene index to export one entry:

Replace [0] with the required index. To export every embedded image, use:

An ICO entry may be labelled 256×256 while containing PNG-compressed image data; the exported PNG uses the actual pixel dimensions stored in that entry.

Using GIMP

Open the file with File → Open.
If GIMP loads the embedded images as separate layers, select the layer with the required dimensions.
Choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .png, and select Export.
Keep the default lossless PNG settings unless a specific compression setting is required.

Quality and compatibility

Conversion cannot add detail absent from the selected ICO entry. Enlarging a 16×16 image to 256×256 may produce blur or jagged edges, so use the largest source entry available.

Transparency normally transfers, but an ICO with a 1-bit mask produces hard transparent edges rather than smooth partial transparency. If the PNG has an unwanted background, enable transparency in the converter or remove the background in an image editor.

PNG compression is lossless, but a PNG can be larger than a small ICO entry. Keep ICO when an application, Windows resource, or legacy favicon workflow specifically requires it; use PNG for ordinary display, editing, documents, and sharing.
