What the AVIF format is

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an image format based on the AV1 codec and the HEIF/ISO Base Media File Format container. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, high bit depth, HDR, wide-gamut color, and metadata. At similar visual quality, AVIF often produces a smaller file than JPEG.

Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and many current image libraries support AVIF. Older operating systems, printers, office applications, content-management systems, and image editors may not. AVIF commonly appears in optimized website images and files exported by current graphics or web-development tools.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, normally identified by .jpg or .jpeg, uses lossy compression suited to photographs and other continuous-tone images. It is supported by virtually all browsers, operating systems, printers, cameras, office applications, and image editors.

JPEG is appropriate when compatibility matters more than maximum compression. It does not retain transparency or animation, and ordinary JPEG workflows do not provide practical lossless editing. Saving the same image repeatedly as JPEG can add visible compression artifacts.

How to convert AVIF files

Using 101convert.com

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is suitable for local or scripted conversion when the installed build includes an AVIF decoder, usually through libheif and an AV1 codec library:

The -quality setting uses a 0–100 scale in typical ImageMagick JPEG builds. Values around 85–92 generally balance detail and file size; inspect the output because the result also depends on the source image and encoder.

If transparency must be flattened against a known color, specify that color instead of accepting the converter's default:

An error such as “no decode delegate” means that the installed ImageMagick build lacks AVIF support; install a build with the required delegates or use an application with native AVIF support. ImageMagick can also process a folder through a shell loop, but the command syntax differs between Bash, PowerShell, and other shells.

Using a desktop image editor

A recent version of GIMP can open AVIF files when AVIF support is included in the installation. Open the file with File → Open, then use File → Export As, choose .jpg, set the JPEG quality, and export. XnConvert is another desktop option for batch conversion; confirm that its installed version lists AVIF as an input format before adding files.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AVIF-to-JPEG conversion is not lossless. The program decodes the AVIF and recompresses the pixels with a JPEG encoder, which can change fine texture, edges, and noise. Avoid converting an already compressed JPEG to AVIF and then back to JPEG when the original JPEG is available.

JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent AVIF pixels must be composited against a background, such as white, before export; otherwise the software may choose its own default color. An animated AVIF normally becomes one JPEG frame, usually the first, unless frames are exported separately.

AVIF may contain HDR, wide-gamut, or 10- or 12-bit image data, while common JPEG export workflows produce an 8-bit image in the sRGB color space. Highlights, saturation, and shadow detail can therefore change. Choose an sRGB output profile and enable tone mapping when the conversion software provides those controls.

Metadata handling varies by converter: EXIF, ICC color profiles, GPS data, and XMP metadata may be copied, changed, or removed. Verify color profile, orientation, dimensions, and required metadata after conversion. Keep the original AVIF when its higher bit depth, transparency, animation, or smaller size may be needed later.
