How to convert docx to jpeg file

A Word document may need to be displayed in a program, upload form, or device that accepts images but cannot open DOCX files. Converting each page to JPEG creates a fixed visual copy for sharing or archiving, but removes normal document editing and text selection.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft Word's Office Open XML document format, packaged as a ZIP archive containing XML files and related resources. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and other office applications use it for editable documents containing text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, and layout settings.

DOCX describes document structure and layout rather than storing each page as an image. Extracting an embedded picture from a DOCX therefore does not convert the whole document; a full conversion must render every page.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a raster image format with broad support in browsers, image viewers, mobile devices, and upload systems. Its lossy compression produces relatively small files, which is useful for sharing page images and fixed previews.

JPEG has no pages, editable text, hyperlinks, comments, or document structure. Compression can blur small text and create artifacts around letters, borders, diagrams, and other sharp edges. It also does not preserve transparency.

Convert the file on 101convert.com

  1. Open the DOCX-to-JPEG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .docx file.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting JPEG file or files.

The service can produce one image for each source page because JPEG cannot store a multi-page document in one file. Keep the downloaded images in their numbered order. This option requires no software installation and is free to use; do not upload confidential documents unless the service's current privacy terms meet your requirements.

Convert locally with PDF and Poppler

For confidential files or repeatable batch processing, render the document locally. First create a PDF with Microsoft Word or LibreOffice, because PDF preserves page boundaries before rasterization.

In Word, use File → Save As or File → Export and choose PDF. In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Export as PDF. Check the PDF before converting it: missing fonts, different font versions, unsupported features, and application-specific layout rules can alter pagination.

Install Poppler's command-line utilities, then run:

pdftoppm -jpeg -r 300 -jpegopt quality=92 document.pdf page

This creates files such as page-1.jpg and page-2.jpg. The -r 300 option renders at 300 DPI, while -jpegopt quality=92 sets JPEG quality. Use -r 150 for screen previews, or limit the range with -f 1 -l 3 to render pages 1 through 3. On Windows, Poppler must be installed separately or supplied by a package that includes pdftoppm.

LibreOffice can create the intermediate PDF without its graphical interface:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output document.docx

Run pdftoppm on the generated PDF in the output directory. This workflow is suitable for scripts, but its layout may differ from Microsoft Word if the document uses Word-specific features or fonts.

Quality and compatibility limits

Use 300 DPI for printed output or pages containing small text. Use 150 DPI when the images are only for screen viewing. Higher DPI increases pixel dimensions, processing time, and file size.

JPEG is a poor choice for pages dominated by black text, line art, tables, or screenshots because lossy artifacts are most visible along sharp boundaries. If the receiving system accepts it, PNG usually preserves those elements better, while PDF preserves searchable text and page layout. JPEG remains appropriate when the target specifically requires JPEG.

Inspect page breaks, fonts, margins, charts, images, and transparent graphics after conversion. The result is a visual rendering, so selectable and searchable text, hyperlinks, comments, styles, accessibility data, and editability are not retained. Keep the original DOCX, or use PDF instead, when those properties or exact print reproduction are required.
