A website, chat app, presentation, or image-only archive may require each document page as a raster image instead of an editable office file. Converting a multi-page document normally produces one PNG file per page.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is Microsoft Word's XML-based document format, packaged as a ZIP archive. It stores editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, and layout instructions rather than fixed page pixels.

Microsoft Word users commonly create DOCX files for reports, letters, forms, and manuscripts. LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, Apple Pages, and other office applications can open them, but layout may change when fonts, embedded objects, or Word-specific features are unavailable.

What the PNG format is

.png is a lossless raster image format. It preserves sharp text, line art, and solid-color graphics without JPEG compression artifacts, and it supports transparency through an alpha channel.

PNG works well for document pages used in websites, presentations, software interfaces, screenshots, and OCR workflows. It does not retain editable text, styles, comments, hyperlinks, or document structure. PNG also has no native multi-page structure, so each page must be saved separately or packaged in a ZIP file.

Convert locally with LibreOffice and Poppler

A repeatable local workflow is to export the DOCX to PDF with LibreOffice, then rasterize the PDF pages with Poppler's pdftoppm utility:

The first command creates output/input.pdf. The second creates files such as output/page-1.png and output/page-2.png. Create the output directory first if it does not exist, and replace 150 with 300 for small text, detailed diagrams, OCR, or print-oriented output. Higher resolution increases pixel dimensions and file size.

In LibreOffice's interface, open the DOCX, check its pagination, and select File → Export as PDF. Microsoft Word can use File → Save as → PDF or File → Export → Create PDF/XPS; Word does not normally export complete document pages directly to PNG. Rasterize the resulting PDF with a PDF-to-image application.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Rendering controls appearance: Install the document's required fonts before local conversion. Missing fonts can alter line breaks, pagination, table widths, symbols, and text alignment.
• Resolution controls readability: Around 150 DPI is often sufficient for screen viewing. Use 300 DPI or higher for printing, small type, or OCR. PNG dimensions and storage requirements rise with DPI.
• Editing is discarded: The PNG contains rendered pixels, not selectable document elements. Keep the original DOCX when the file may need revision, accessibility support, or text extraction.
• Photographic pages can be large: PNG is efficient for text, diagrams, and flat-color graphics but may be much larger than JPEG for pages dominated by photographs. Use PNG when lossless detail or transparency matters.
• Review complex documents: Embedded videos, unsupported fonts, floating objects, tracked changes, comments, and Word-specific layout features may render differently or be omitted by non-Word software.
