Convert AAE to PNG

Programs that require a standard image file, or people who need to share an edited Apple photo, may appear to need an AAE-to-PNG conversion. An AAE file cannot supply the image itself, so the conversion must use the associated original photo and render its edits first.

What the AAE format is

AAE is an Apple Photos sidecar file containing XML instructions for non-destructive edits made to a photo on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The instructions can describe cropping, rotation, filters, exposure, color, and other adjustments; the pixels remain in the associated HEIC, JPEG, or other source image.

AAE files commonly appear when photos are copied from an Apple device to Windows or extracted from a backup. The sidecar normally has the same base filename as the source image, such as IMG_1234.HEIC and IMG_1234.AAE. Renaming .aae to .png does not create an image, and an AAE file by itself cannot be rendered into one.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format with lossless compression and support for transparency. It is widely supported by browsers, operating systems, image editors, publishing software, and applications that require a standard image file.

PNG is suitable for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and graphics with sharp edges. It is usually larger than JPEG for photographs because it preserves the rendered pixels instead of applying photographic lossy compression. Exporting a photo as PNG does not create transparency unless the source and editing process contain transparent areas.

How to create a PNG from an AAE edit

Use Apple Photos on a Mac

1. Keep the original image and its matching AAE file together with their original filenames. If the photo is already in an iCloud-synced or local Photos library, use that library instead of importing a duplicate.
2. Import the source image through File → Import, if necessary. Photos may read a matching Apple sidecar, but sidecar recognition is not guaranteed for files copied from every device, backup, or third-party application.
3. Open the photo and check that the crop, filter, and other adjustments are displayed. If the edits are absent, obtain the edited version from the original iPhone, iPad, or Photos library; do not export the unedited source and assume the AAE was applied.
4. Choose File → Export → Export 1 Photo.
5. Set Photo Kind to PNG, select the required size, retain the original size when dimensions matter, and choose Export.

Export from an iPhone or iPad

Open the edited photo in Photos and use Share to send or save the rendered photo, rather than transferring the AAE alone. The resulting file may be HEIC or JPEG depending on the device and sharing method. If PNG is required, open that exported image in macOS Preview and choose File → Export, then set Format to PNG; on Windows, use an image editor or converter that supports the source format.

Use desktop software after rendering the edits

On macOS, Preview can convert an already rendered HEIC or JPEG with File → Export. On Windows, IrfanView, XnView MP, and GIMP can open supported HEIC or JPEG files and export them as PNG, but they generally do not interpret Apple Photos AAE instructions. Render the photo in Apple Photos first when preserving the edits is required.

Use an online converter only for the original image

Services such as CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar can convert a supported HEIC or JPEG to PNG, but they do not normally apply Apple AAE sidecar instructions. Upload the rendered image, not the AAE file. Check the service's format support, file-retention policy, and privacy terms before uploading personal photos; offline conversion is preferable for sensitive images.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The PNG contains the final rasterized appearance, not the editable AAE adjustment history. Future edits must be made to the PNG or to the original photo in Apple Photos. PNG conversion does not restore detail already removed by cropping or low-resolution export.

Choose the original-resolution export for printing, cropping, or further editing. If Photos shows no adjustments, the sidecar may be missing, mismatched, renamed, created by another application, or unsupported by the importing version of Photos. If only the AAE file remains, recover the corresponding original image from the device, Photos library, backup, or sender; no converter can reconstruct the missing pixels from AAE XML alone.
