How to convert txt to png file

A messaging, publishing, or document system may accept an image but reject a plain-text file, so the text must be rendered as a picture before upload or sharing. PNG preserves the visible characters and layout as pixels, but the result is no longer directly selectable or editable text.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without embedded fonts, colors, images, page dimensions, or rich-document layout. Files normally use the .txt extension and are created with Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit in plain-text mode, Linux editors such as Vim and nano, programming tools, terminals, export utilities, and logging systems.

TXT does not usually record its character encoding. A file may use UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252, or another code page, and may use Windows CRLF or Unix LF line endings. Encoding affects accented characters, non-Latin scripts, symbols, and tabs when the text is rendered.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores pixels with lossless compression. It supports sharp text edges, RGB or grayscale color, and transparency, making it suitable for screenshots, graphics, documents, and images that need repeated saving without JPEG-style lossy degradation.

A PNG contains a visual copy rather than the original text structure. It is not normally searchable, selectable, or editable as text, and it is usually much larger than the source TXT file. OCR can recover text from the image, but recognition may introduce errors.

How to convert TXT to PNG online

  1. Open the TXT-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .txt file.
  3. Start the conversion and download the generated .png file.
  4. Inspect the image for missing characters, incorrect line wrapping, clipped lines, and unexpected page breaks before sharing it.

This option requires no installed software and is free to use. Do not upload confidential logs, credentials, personal records, or other sensitive text unless the service's current privacy and retention terms are acceptable.

How to convert TXT to PNG on a computer

ImageMagick is suitable for scripted or repeatable rendering. After installing it and a font that covers every character in the file, run:

magick -size 1600x -background white -fill black -font DejaVu-Sans -pointsize 24 caption:@input.txt output.png

Replace input.txt and output.png with the required paths. The caption: image type wraps text to the specified width; change 1600x to control the output width and 24 to change the font size. Rendering depends on the operating system's text decoding and ImageMagick configuration, so verify Unicode output rather than assuming that the file is UTF-8.

For short, single-line content, use:

magick -background white -fill black -font DejaVu-Sans -pointsize 32 label:@input.txt output.png

label: is intended for short text and provides less multiline layout control than caption:. Quote paths containing spaces according to the shell being used.

How to create paginated PNG files

For a long TXT file, use LibreOffice Writer or another document editor to set the font, margins, page size, line spacing, and page breaks. Open the text, choose File → Export as PDF, then rasterize the PDF with Poppler's pdftoppm utility:

pdftoppm -png -r 150 document.pdf page

This produces files such as page-1.png and page-2.png. Use -r 300 for printed pages or small type, accepting larger images and files. A document editor is preferable to one extremely tall PNG when the source contains many pages.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Encoding: open or import the TXT file using its actual encoding. A wrong encoding can replace characters before conversion. UTF-8 is common but cannot be assumed.
  • Fonts: missing glyphs may appear as boxes or replacement characters. Select a font covering the source language and symbols.
  • Layout: TXT has no inherent page width, font, margin, or pagination. The conversion must choose these settings, so long lines, tabs, and blank lines may look different from the original editor.
  • Transparency: a white background improves readability and compatibility; transparent backgrounds are useful for design overlays but can make text appear invisible on some viewers.
  • Resolution: choose pixel dimensions appropriate to the destination. Around 150–200 DPI is generally adequate for screen-oriented pages, while 300 DPI is better for print or small characters.
  • Large files: rendering a book or large log as one PNG can produce an impractically tall image. Use separate pages or images instead.
