What the IMS format is

.ims is an extension used by several unrelated programs, including proprietary imaging, scientific, and application-specific systems. Some IMS files contain raster image data; others store project information, measurements, metadata, or sound and application resources rather than a directly viewable picture.

Check the file's source, its properties, or the software that created it before converting. Renaming file.ims to file.png does not convert the data and can make the file harder to identify.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office software, and image editors. It supports sharp text and line art, indexed or true-color images, and an optional alpha channel for transparency.

PNG is suitable when you need a broadly compatible still image without JPEG compression artifacts. It may produce larger files than JPEG for photographs, and it cannot preserve IMS-specific project data, measurements, layers, or other non-image content.

How to convert IMS to PNG

Using the online converter

1. Open the IMS-to-PNG conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drop the source file with the .ims extension.
3. Choose PNG as the output format if the page provides a format selector.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .png file when processing finishes.
5. Open the PNG in an image viewer and check its dimensions, colors, transparency, and visible content.

This method requires no installed software, but it works only when the converter recognizes the particular IMS variant. A file containing project data instead of a standalone image cannot be converted into a meaningful PNG without first opening or rendering it in its source application.

Using the program that created the file

1. Open the IMS file in its original application or in the vendor's current viewer.
2. Use File → Open, Import, or the application's equivalent command.
3. Choose File → Export, Save as, or Export image.
4. Select PNG, set the required pixel dimensions and resolution, and enable transparency only if the source supports it.
5. Save the output with a new filename such as sample.png.

If the application has no PNG export, export TIFF, BMP, or another supported raster format first, then open that file in an editor such as GIMP or ImageMagick and save it as PNG. The exact IMS application is required to choose a reliable intermediate format; generic software cannot decode every IMS variant.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

PNG conversion preserves the pixels that can be decoded, but it does not restore information that the IMS reader cannot interpret. Multi-page, animated, layered, or measurement-based IMS content may be reduced to one rendered frame or may require separate exports.

For publication or archival output, verify the original pixel dimensions and color mode. Increasing PNG dimensions during export adds interpolated pixels rather than detail; converting a high-bit-depth or color-managed IMS image may also change its colors if the source profile is not preserved.
