Many browsers, office applications, and sharing platforms do not open Panasonic camera RAW files directly. Converting an RW2 image to PNG produces a broadly supported raster file for editing, publishing, or sharing, but removes the original RAW editing flexibility.

What the RW2 format is

RW2 is Panasonic’s RAW format, used by Lumix cameras including many GH, G, GX, and FZ models. It stores minimally processed sensor data plus camera metadata, so compatible software can adjust exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, and color before rendering the photograph.

RW2 files commonly appear when photographs are copied from a Panasonic camera or memory card. Supported applications include Panasonic SILKYPIX, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, darktable, and RawTherapee; basic image viewers and browsers may not support every RW2 variant.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster-image format that uses lossless compression. It is widely supported by browsers, operating systems, image editors, and publishing applications, and it preserves sharp edges, text, and transparency without the compression artifacts produced by JPEG.

PNG is suitable when an application requires a standard image file or when you need to share a rendered photograph without RAW software. It normally creates larger photographic files than JPEG and does not retain the editable sensor data in the RW2.

Use an embedded sRGB profile when the PNG is intended for browsers or general-purpose applications. Select 16-bit PNG when further editing requires additional tonal precision; select 8-bit PNG for smaller files and broader compatibility. The source RW2 remains the file to archive if future RAW adjustments may be needed.

PNG’s compression is lossless after rendering, but it cannot restore detail clipped during capture or lost through the chosen RAW-processing settings. It can also be substantially larger than a high-quality JPEG, which is often more practical for ordinary photographic sharing.
