How to convert jpeg to png file

A design application may require PNG for transparency, screenshots, or lossless editing, while a camera or phone may provide only a JPEG. Converting is useful for compatibility and further editing, but it cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, commonly identified by the .jpg or .jpeg extension, is a lossy raster-image format designed to reduce the size of photographic images. Digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, websites, browsers, and image editors commonly create or export JPEG files.

JPEG is efficient for photographs and images with gradual color changes. Standard JPEG files do not provide an alpha channel for transparency. Repeated editing and saving can add blocking, ringing, and color artifacts because the image is recompressed each time.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster-image format that normally uses lossless compression. It preserves the pixel data supplied to the encoder and supports grayscale, RGB, indexed-color, and RGBA images. RGBA includes an alpha channel for transparent or partially transparent pixels.

PNG suits screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams, text-heavy graphics, and images that will be edited repeatedly. Its compression is often efficient for flat-color artwork, but a PNG is usually larger than a JPEG containing the same photograph. Saving a JPEG as PNG prevents another JPEG compression cycle; it does not recover detail, color information, or sharp edges lost in the original JPEG.

How to convert a JPEG to PNG

Use the built-in converter

  1. Open the JPEG-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com; it can be used for free without installing software.
  2. Select or drag in the source file, such as photo.jpg.
  3. Choose PNG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the result, such as photo.png, then check its dimensions, appearance, and transparency before using it.

Do not upload confidential or sensitive images unless the service's handling and retention policies are acceptable. For private files, use a local application instead.

Use desktop software

In Windows Paint, open the JPEG and choose File → Save as → PNG picture. Enter a new filename and save it; keeping the original extension unchanged can cause confusion, so use a filename ending in .png.

In macOS Preview, open the image and choose File → Export. Select PNG from the format menu and save the exported copy.

GIMP provides additional control. Open the JPEG, choose File → Export As, set a filename ending in .png, select Export, review the PNG options, and confirm the export.

ImageMagick can convert one file from a command line with:

magick input.jpg output.png

For multiple JPEG files, create an output directory first and use a separate destination so the originals remain untouched:

mkdir png-output
magick mogrify -path png-output -format png *.jpg

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a JPEG to PNG does not create new image detail or remove existing JPEG artifacts. For the cleanest result, start with the original camera file or an earlier editing source rather than a JPEG that has already been resized or repeatedly saved.

JPEG contains no transparent pixels, so conversion cannot automatically make its background transparent. To create transparency, remove or mask the background in an image editor, then export the edited image as PNG.

PNG is widely supported, but some older or limited applications may not handle alpha transparency, indexed color, high bit depth, or embedded color profiles correctly. Use standard RGB PNG when compatibility is more important than extended color data, and verify the result in the target application.

Conversion tools may preserve, alter, or remove metadata such as EXIF camera data, orientation tags, and color profiles. Check the output orientation and color appearance when those properties matter, and compare file sizes before converting large photographic collections because PNG is rarely smaller than JPEG for photographs.
