How to convert webp to png file

A graphics editor, publishing application, or older device may accept PNG but not WEBP, requiring a compatible copy for editing, sharing, or archiving. You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software, or use a desktop tool for confidential files and batch work.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google and used by web browsers, content-management systems, and image-optimization tools. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animated images containing multiple frames.

Websites commonly deliver WEBP files because they are often smaller than PNG files. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Android, WordPress, GIMP, Photoshop, and Affinity Photo can generally display or create WEBP files, although support varies by software version and feature.

What the PNG format is

PNG uses lossless compression and supports grayscale, indexed color, full-color RGB images, and alpha transparency. It is widely accepted by older applications, publishing software, print workflows, and devices that do not recognize WEBP.

PNG suits logos, screenshots, diagrams, interface graphics, line art, and images that will be edited repeatedly. PNG files are usually larger than lossy WEBP files, especially for photographs.

How to convert WEBP to PNG

Use 101convert.com

  1. Open the WEBP-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or drag the .webp file into the upload area.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
  4. Download the resulting .png file and open it in the target application.

Use a local application instead of an online converter for confidential images, very large files, or recurring batch conversions.

Use ImageMagick

Install ImageMagick, open a terminal in the source folder, and run:

magick input.webp output.png

To convert every WEBP file in a Unix-like shell:

for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" "${f%.webp}.png"; done

ImageMagick normally retains the source alpha channel. Open the output in an image viewer to check transparency and appearance.

Use a desktop image editor

In GIMP, choose File → Open, then File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .png, and select Export. In Photoshop, choose File → Open, then File → Export → Export As, select PNG, and export the image. Menu names and WEBP support can vary by application version.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a lossy WEBP to PNG does not restore detail discarded during the original WEBP encoding. PNG prevents another lossy-compression step, but it cannot make an already compressed photograph sharper.

A static conversion of an animated WEBP may export only its first frame. Some tools can export each frame as a separate PNG, but PNG itself is not a standard animated-image format; APNG is a separate animated PNG variant and is not supported everywhere.

Transparency is retained only when the converter and destination preserve the source alpha channel. An application may flatten transparent pixels onto a solid background, so inspect the PNG against a contrasting background. Color profiles, metadata, and animation behavior can also vary between conversion tools.

Keep WEBP when small photographic files are the priority and the destination supports it. Use PNG when compatibility, transparency, screenshots, diagrams, or lossless graphic editing is required.
