Convert PSB to PNG

A browser, website CMS, office application, or mobile device may require a standard image instead of a Photoshop Large Document. Converting PSB to PNG creates a shareable raster image with optional transparency, but it removes the editable Photoshop document structure.

What the PSB format is

PSB means Photoshop Large Document format. Adobe Photoshop uses it for raster projects that exceed PSD limits, including documents larger than 2 GB or canvases exceeding PSD’s approximately 30,000-pixel dimension limit; PSB supports dimensions up to approximately 300,000 pixels in either direction, subject to other Photoshop and system limits.

PSB files can contain layers, masks, channels, adjustment layers, editable text, vector shapes, transparency, layer effects, and Photoshop-specific editing data. Photoshop users, photographers, illustrators, designers, and studios use PSB for very large composites, scans, posters, maps, and other projects that cannot fit reliably in PSD. Browsers and many general-purpose image applications do not open PSB directly.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office software, and most image editors. It works well for logos, screenshots, interface graphics, illustrations, and images that need crisp edges or transparent backgrounds. PNG supports RGB and grayscale images with 8- or 16-bit integer channels and an alpha channel for transparency; it does not support CMYK color as a standard PNG color type.

PNG stores a rendered image, not Photoshop’s layer structure. Layers, editable text, adjustment layers, guides, masks, and most layer effects become part of the flattened pixel output.

Convert PSB with Adobe Photoshop

1. Open the .psb file with File → Open.
2. Check layer visibility, canvas dimensions, color mode, resolution, and transparency. Hide or show layers before exporting because only the visible composite is written to the PNG.
3. For a web or device image, resize it with Image → Image Size. Set the required pixel dimensions and leave Resample enabled when reducing the image.
4. For a normal-sized result, choose File → Export → Export As, select PNG, choose the required dimensions, and enable transparency when the background should remain transparent.
5. Export the file. Photoshop writes a new .png and leaves the PSB unchanged.

For a full-size copy, use File → Save a Copy and select PNG where that option is available. Photoshop may flatten the document or warn that features unsupported by PNG will be discarded from the exported copy. Keep the original PSB because neither export method preserves an editable layer structure.

Convert PSB with ImageMagick

ImageMagick can read PSB through its PSD/PSB image coder, although support depends on the installed version, build policies, available memory, and the document’s features. A basic conversion is:

Use a current ImageMagick installation and test the result visually. ImageMagick may render Photoshop effects, color profiles, transparency, or layer composites differently from Photoshop, and very large PSB files can exceed memory or security limits. Photoshop is the safer choice when visual fidelity and color management matter.

Use an online converter

CloudConvert and Zamzar are established browser-based services that may accept PSB and produce PNG. Upload the file, choose PNG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Availability, maximum file size, processing time, and PSB support can vary by service and account, so confirm those limits before uploading.

Online conversion sends the artwork to a third party. Do not upload confidential designs, unreleased work, or personal data unless the provider’s retention, deletion, and security terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Conversion is destructive to document structure: PNG contains the selected rendered appearance, not editable layers, text, masks, adjustment layers, or Photoshop effects. Archive the PSB separately.
• Transparency depends on the source and export: transparent PSB pixels become PNG alpha transparency when transparency is preserved; a visible background layer produces opaque pixels.
• PNG is lossless, not universally compact: it preserves pixel detail without JPEG-style loss, but photographs and complex paintings are often smaller as JPEG or WebP. PNG is usually better for flat artwork, text, and transparency.
• Color can change: wide-gamut or print-profiled PSB files may look different in unmanaged applications. For web delivery, use Edit → Convert to Profile to convert to sRGB, then embed the profile when the destination supports ICC profiles.
• Unsupported color modes require conversion: CMYK, Lab, multichannel, and some HDR document modes must be converted to a PNG-compatible RGB or grayscale mode before export.
• Large dimensions remain expensive: flattening does not make a huge canvas small in memory. Resize the image before export when the receiving application or device does not need the original pixel dimensions.
