How to convert psb to psd file

A recipient, editor, asset manager, or publishing workflow may accept PSD but not Photoshop’s large-document format. Converting can also make a file easier to open in other editors, but oversized documents may require resampling, cropping, or flattening first.

What the PSB format is

PSB, or Photoshop Large Document format, is Adobe Photoshop’s format for documents that exceed standard PSD limits. PSD is limited to 2 GB and 30,000 × 30,000 pixels; PSB supports documents up to approximately 300,000 × 300,000 pixels.

PSB is used for large scans, panoramas, posters, textures, composites, and layered artwork. It can retain layers, masks, channels, adjustment layers, blending modes, smart objects, and other Photoshop data, although support varies between applications.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Photoshop’s standard layered document format. Adobe Photoshop, Photopea, Affinity Photo, GIMP, Photoshop Elements, and many asset-management and design applications can open PSD files, but features such as adjustment layers, masks, smart objects, fonts, and layer effects may not be interpreted identically.

PSD is the suitable target when the document fits within the 2 GB and 30,000-pixel limits and must remain editable in software that does not support PSB.

How to convert PSB to PSD

Adobe Photoshop

  1. Open the .psb file in Photoshop and save a backup of the original.
  2. Check the dimensions with Image → Image Size. Both dimensions must be 30,000 pixels or less, and the resulting PSD must not exceed 2 GB.
  3. Choose File → Save As or, in versions using the newer document workflow, File → Save a Copy.
  4. Select Photoshop (*.PSD; *.PDD), enter a filename ending in .psd, and save.
  5. If Photoshop offers Maximize Compatibility, enable it when the file must open in older Photoshop releases or third-party software. The option stores a composite preview and can increase file size.
  6. Reopen the PSD and check layers, masks, text, channels, transparency, color profile, smart objects, and effects.

Photoshop will report when the document cannot be saved as PSD. If it exceeds the pixel or file-size limit, reduce dimensions with Image → Image Size, crop the canvas, remove unnecessary content, or flatten a copy. Resampling changes image data; flattening preserves the visible composite but removes independent layer editing. Use a new output filename so the original PSB remains intact.

Photopea

Photopea can open many PSB files and save them through File → Save as PSD. It is useful when Photoshop is unavailable, but browser memory, document size, unsupported Photoshop features, and the handling of sensitive files can affect the result. Verify the saved PSD in a desktop editor before delivery.

Online conversion services

CloudConvert and Zamzar offer PSB-to-PSD conversion where their current service limits permit it. Large layered files may exceed upload, processing, storage, or file-size limits, and some services may reject PSB files or omit unsupported Photoshop features. Use online conversion only for non-confidential files, and inspect the output in Photoshop or another layer-aware editor. Do not assume that a successful download retained every layer or effect.

Quality and compatibility limits

A direct save from PSB to PSD does not inherently reduce raster quality. However, unsupported smart objects, linked assets, video or 3D content, extended channel data, layer effects, adjustment features, and embedded resources may be changed or discarded.

A PSB exceeding 2 GB or 30,000 pixels in either dimension cannot become a normal PSD without modification. Reducing dimensions resamples the image; flattening removes layer editability; splitting the artwork into several files changes the document structure. PSD also does not guarantee compatibility with every application.

Preserve the embedded ICC profile and keep the original PSB as the master file. If the recipient needs consistent appearance rather than editable layers, provide a flattened TIFF, PNG, or JPEG alongside the PSD.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PSB and PSD when converting?

PSB is the large-document version of the editable Photoshop format, while PSD is intended for smaller documents. The conversion keeps the document in the same general format family, but PSD has stricter size and dimension limits.

Will my PSB layers remain editable after converting to PSD?

Layers generally remain editable when the document fits within PSD’s limits and its contents are supported by PSD. Some PSB-only or unsupported features may be flattened, discarded, or changed during conversion.

Why can’t my PSB file be saved as a PSD?

A PSB cannot be saved as PSD if its file size, canvas dimensions, or other contents exceed what PSD supports. Reducing the canvas dimensions or document complexity may be necessary, and simply renaming the extension will not fix the problem.

Will converting PSB to PSD reduce image quality?

Converting PSB to PSD does not normally reduce raster image quality because both formats can store editable image data without requiring lossy compression. Quality can change if the conversion must resize, flatten, or rasterize content to make the document fit PSD’s restrictions.
