Free online WEBP to PLY converter

A WEBP image cannot directly provide the vertices, faces, or depth data required by a PLY file. Conversion is useful when a 3D program accepts only PLY and you want to turn the image into a height-map mesh, point cloud, or simple textured reference surface.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format used for 2D textures, reference images, thumbnails, and rendered previews in 3D workflows. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Web browsers, image editors such as GIMP and Photoshop, render pipelines, asset-management tools, and some 3D applications create or export WEBP files.

A WEBP stores pixels rather than 3D coordinates. Even a rendered image of a model contains no recoverable mesh topology or reliable camera-depth information, so a normal format conversion cannot recreate the original object.

What the PLY format is

PLY, also called the Stanford Polygon File Format, stores 3D point-cloud or polygon-mesh data. Its elements can include vertex positions, face indices, normals, colors, transparency values, and other properties.

PLY is commonly used by MeshLab, CloudCompare, Blender, 3D scanners, photogrammetry software, and research tools. It is useful for point-cloud inspection, scanned geometry, mesh processing, and exchanging uncomplicated geometry between modeling applications. PLY is generally not a good choice for retaining a WEBP texture, because texture-image references and material behavior are not consistently supported by PLY readers and exporters.

How to actually convert WEBP to PLY

Generate a height-map mesh in Blender

This method treats the WEBP's brightness as elevation; it does not recover the photographed or rendered object's original shape.

1. Open Blender and create a new scene.
2. Add a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane, enter Edit Mode, and subdivide it into enough grid cells for the image resolution. More subdivisions produce finer relief but increase the PLY size.
3. UV unwrap the plane using UV → Unwrap.
4. Add a Displace modifier from Modifiers → Add Modifier → Displace, select New for its texture, then open the WEBP in the texture settings.
5. Set the modifier coordinates to UV, choose the displacement direction, and adjust Strength and Midlevel. A grayscale WEBP gives predictable elevation; color images are converted to luminance by the texture evaluation.
6. Apply the modifier so the displaced surface becomes actual mesh geometry.
7. Export the mesh through File → Export → Stanford (.ply). Enable vertex normals or vertex colors only when the receiving application needs them.

Use the image as a reference or texture

If the goal is to place the WEBP on a 3D plane rather than create relief, import it as an image plane or apply it to a plane material in Blender, then export the plane as PLY through File → Export → Stanford (.ply). The exported file contains the plane's vertices and faces; the WEBP texture may not travel with it. Keep the original WEBP beside the PLY and relink it in the destination program when texture support is available.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• A small or heavily compressed WEBP produces stepped or noisy relief. Use a lossless, high-resolution source when the image is intended to drive geometry.
• Brightness-to-height conversion is ambiguous: dark and light regions become elevations according to the selected mapping, while hidden surfaces and true depth remain unknown.
• A PLY export normally preserves geometry, but materials, UV texture links, and the original WEBP are not reliably preserved across applications. Export vertex colors when color needs to remain embedded.
• PLY can contain points without faces or a polygon mesh. Confirm whether the receiving program expects a point cloud, triangles, normals, or vertex colors before exporting.
