How to convert fbx to ply file
- 3D modeling
- No ratings yet.
Many 3D scanners, point-cloud applications, research tools, and mesh utilities require PLY instead of FBX. Converting is appropriate when the destination needs mesh or point data but not FBX animation, rigging, materials, or scene hierarchy.
What the FBX format is
FBX (Filmbox) is a proprietary Autodesk format used to exchange 3D scenes between applications such as Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Unity, and Unreal Engine. An FBX file can contain polygon meshes, transforms, cameras, lights, materials, image-texture references, skeletons, skin weights, morph targets, and animation.
FBX is commonly used for modeled or animated assets moving between digital content creation and game-development software. Its scene-oriented structure stores substantially more information than PLY can represent.
What the PLY format is
PLY, also called the Stanford Polygon or Stanford Triangle format, is an open format with a simple header that describes elements such as vertices and faces. It can store positions, normals, vertex colors, and other per-vertex or per-face properties; it supports ASCII and binary little-endian or big-endian encodings.
PLY is common in 3D scanning, photogrammetry, point-cloud processing, computer-vision research, geometry analysis, and some 3D-printing workflows. Binary PLY is normally smaller and faster to load than ASCII PLY, while ASCII is easier to inspect or edit manually.
Convert with Blender
Blender is the most practical desktop option because it imports FBX, lets you remove unwanted scene objects, and exports selected mesh geometry as PLY.
- Open Blender and choose File → Import → FBX (.fbx).
- Select the source
.fbxfile and confirm the import. Inspect the objects in the 3D Viewport. - Delete cameras, lights, armatures, and other non-mesh objects that should not be exported. Select the required mesh objects.
- Use Object → Apply → Rotation & Scale when the receiving application needs baked object transforms. Apply location only if the exported vertex coordinates should be relative to the current scene origin.
- Join multiple meshes with Object → Join if the destination expects one mesh. Joining does not weld overlapping vertices; use Edit Mode → Mesh → Clean Up → Merge by Distance only when coincident vertices should be merged.
- Recalculate incorrect normals in Edit Mode with Mesh → Normals → Recalculate Outside. Triangulate the mesh first if the destination accepts triangles only.
- Choose File → Export → Stanford (.ply), enable Selection Only when appropriate, and choose the required export properties.
- Choose binary little-endian for a compact file and faster loading, or ASCII when the file must be human-readable. Enable vertex colors and normals when the source contains those attributes and the destination needs them.
- Enter a filename such as
model.plyand select Export PLY.
For a no-install conversion, upload model.fbx to the converter on 101convert.com, choose PLY as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .ply file.
Quality and compatibility limits
- The conversion normally preserves mesh positions and faces but discards FBX animation, armatures, skin weights, cameras, lights, object hierarchy, material networks, and texture images. PLY does not preserve a complete textured scene.
- A material color is not the same as vertex color. A model that appears colored in FBX may produce an uncolored PLY unless usable vertex-color data is present and preserved by both import and export.
- Several FBX meshes may need to be exported separately to retain object boundaries, or joined before export when the receiving program requires one mesh. A PLY file can contain vertex and face elements but does not reproduce the original FBX scene structure.
- Check the result in Blender or a compatible PLY viewer. Verify vertex and face counts, normals, colors, scale, axis orientation, and triangulation. FBX applications can use different units and coordinate conventions, and import or export settings may change polygon representation.
