Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TIF image must be converted to PLY when a 3D application, scanner workflow, or printer requires a mesh instead of a raster height or depth map. This is not a direct format change: the pixel values must be interpreted as elevation or distance to generate vertices and faces.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also called TIFF, is a raster image format that stores pixels, color channels, metadata, and sometimes multiple pages. In 3D work, TIF files commonly contain grayscale heightmaps, depth maps, terrain data, displacement textures, or scan-related images. Their lossless compression and support for 8-bit, 16-bit, and higher precision channels make them suitable for preserving elevation values.

3D scanners, terrain and GIS software, digital sculpting applications, image editors such as Photoshop and GIMP, and scientific imaging tools can create TIF files. A normal photographic TIF is still only a texture; it does not contain the geometry required for a PLY model.

What the PLY format is

PLY, or Polygon File Format, stores 3D geometry as vertices and, optionally, edges, polygon faces, normals, colors, and other per-vertex properties. It is widely supported by MeshLab, Blender, CloudCompare, Open3D, 3D scanners, and point-cloud processing software.

PLY supports ASCII and binary storage. Binary PLY is usually smaller and faster to load, while ASCII PLY is easier to inspect manually. The format can represent a triangle mesh or an unconnected point cloud, but it does not automatically preserve the layers, compression settings, or editing structure of the source TIF.

How to actually convert TIF to PLY

Use Blender when the TIF is a grayscale heightmap and you need a polygon mesh.

  1. Inspect the TIF in an image editor. Use a single grayscale channel, remove unintended borders, and confirm whether white represents high or low elevation. Preserve 16-bit data if the source contains fine height differences.
  2. Open Blender, delete the default objects, and add a plane through Add → Mesh → Plane.
  3. Enter Edit Mode, select the plane, and subdivide it enough to match the required detail. A 2048 × 2048 heightmap cannot produce useful detail from a plane with only a few hundred vertices; the mesh must have sufficient grid resolution.
  4. Return to Object Mode and add Modifiers → Add Modifier → Displace. Create a texture for the modifier, set its type to an image or movie, and load the TIF in the Texture Properties panel.
  5. Set the displacement coordinates to UV or Generated, adjust Strength to control the vertical scale, and adjust Midlevel if the neutral elevation is not the image midpoint. Reverse the displacement direction when the heightmap is inverted.
  6. Apply the displacement modifier after checking the result. Export through File → Export → Stanford (.ply), enable Apply Modifiers if it is available in the export panel, choose ASCII or binary encoding, and save the PLY.

You can also convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. An online workflow can only create useful geometry if it treats the TIF as a height or depth source; renaming or directly re-encoding image pixels does not create a 3D model.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion result depends on the meaning of the pixel values. A heightmap produces a surface over a regular grid, while a depth map requires camera calibration or a coordinate convention to produce correctly scaled 3D points. A color TIF normally needs a separate depth source; its RGB values alone do not define object shape.

Increasing mesh subdivision can preserve more detail but increases PLY size and memory use. Excessive subdivision also transfers image noise into the mesh, so blur or denoise the heightmap before displacement when small pixel variations are not physical features. Set horizontal and vertical scale explicitly because a TIF has pixels but no inherent real-world unit.

PLY export may preserve vertex colors or normals, but a Blender material and a TIF texture are not guaranteed to survive as a PLY texture. If color is required, bake it into vertex colors or export the color image separately. Check the exported file in MeshLab or CloudCompare for inverted normals, reversed elevation, missing faces, and the expected unit scale.
