Free online GIF to PLY converter
Turn a GIF into a PLY height-map mesh using grayscale brightness as surface depth.

Model type
A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.
Model size (longest side)
Height
Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.
Mesh detail
More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.
Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

What the GIF format is
GIF is a raster image format commonly used for indexed-color illustrations, screenshots, texture references, and short animations. Image editors, web browsers, screen-capture tools, and animation software create GIF files. A GIF contains pixel colors and may contain multiple frames, but it contains no vertex positions, surface depth, normals, or 3D faces.
What the PLY format is
PLY, also called the Polygon File Format or Stanford Triangle Format, stores 3D geometry as a list of vertices and optional polygon faces. A PLY file can also contain vertex colors, normals, texture coordinates, and other properties. ASCII PLY is easy to inspect and debug; binary PLY is smaller and faster for large meshes. PLY is supported by applications such as MeshLab, Blender, CloudCompare, Open3D, and many 3D-scanning tools.
You need PLY when the destination application expects explicit 3D geometry rather than a 2D bitmap. Because GIF has no depth data, the conversion must use a rule such as brightness becomes height; it cannot recover the real 3D shape of an object depicted in the image.
How to actually convert GIF to PLY
For a grayscale height-map conversion, use Python with Pillow and generate an ASCII PLY mesh. The script below uses the first GIF frame by default, creates one vertex per pixel, and maps black to the highest point and white to the lowest point.
Save this as gif_heightmap.py:
from PIL import Image
import sys
source, target = sys.argv[1], sys.argv[2]
height = float(sys.argv[3]) if len(sys.argv) > 3 else 10.0
frame = int(sys.argv[4]) if len(sys.argv) > 4 else 0
image = Image.open(source)
image.seek(frame)
image = image.convert("L")
image.thumbnail((300, 300))
w, h = image.size
pixels = list(image.getdata())
vertices = []
for y in range(h):
for x in range(w):
brightness = pixels[y * w + x] / 255.0
z = (1.0 - brightness) * height
vertices.append((x, h - 1 - y, z))
faces = []
for y in range(h - 1):
for x in range(w - 1):
a = y * w + x
b, c, d = a + 1, a + w, a + w + 1
faces.extend(((a, c, b), (b, c, d)))
with open(target, "w", encoding="ascii") as f:
f.write("ply\nformat ascii 1.0\n")
f.write(f"element vertex {len(vertices)}\n")
f.write("property float x\nproperty float y\nproperty float z\n")
f.write(f"element face {len(faces)}\n")
f.write("property list uchar int vertex_indices\nend_header\n")
for vertex in vertices:
f.write("%.6f %.6f %.6f\n" % vertex)
for face in faces:
f.write("3 %d %d %d\n" % face)
Install Pillow and run the conversion with a chosen height scale:
python -m pip install Pillow
python gif_heightmap.py input.gif output.ply 20 0
Here, 20 is the maximum relative Z height and 0 selects the first frame. To convert another animation frame, replace the final value, for example python gif_heightmap.py input.gif output.ply 20 5. Open the result in MeshLab with File → Import Mesh or in Blender with File → Import → Stanford (.ply).
You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software, but a generic online conversion cannot invent missing depth. Use it only when the service offers a documented image-to-height-map or image-to-point-cloud option; otherwise the result may be unavailable or merely a non-geometric reinterpretation.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- An animated GIF is not converted into one animated PLY file by this method. Convert frames separately, or create a separate 3D animation in the destination software.
- Color information is discarded by the sample script. If the source contains colored regions, convert it to grayscale deliberately or add RGB properties to the PLY vertices.
- The script limits the image to 300 pixels on its longest side. Increasing that limit creates more vertices and faces, which can make import and editing slow.
- GIF transparency becomes whatever grayscale value Pillow produces after conversion; transparent regions should be masked explicitly if they must become holes or a flat background.
- PLY has no universal material and texture workflow. A PLY mesh normally transfers geometry and optional per-vertex color, not the original GIF as a texture. For a flat textured surface, keep the GIF as a texture in a 3D application and use a format with dependable material and UV support instead.
