How to convert 3ds to ply file

What the PLY format is

PLY, also called the Polygon File Format or Stanford Triangle Format, stores vertices and polygon faces with optional properties such as normals, vertex colors, texture coordinates, and scanner-specific values. MeshLab, CloudCompare, 3D-scanning applications, computer-vision libraries, and custom geometry tools commonly support it.

PLY can use human-readable ASCII or compact binary encoding. It is well suited to raw mesh and point-cloud data, but its usual structure does not preserve cameras, lights, animation, object hierarchies, complete material graphs, or linked texture files. Binary PLY is normally smaller and faster to load; ASCII is useful when inspecting or editing the file manually.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Materials and textures: PLY generally carries geometry and selected vertex properties, not complete 3DS materials or texture-image links. A textured model may therefore export without its appearance, or retain only vertex colors or texture coordinates.
  • Scene information: Cameras, lights, animation, modifiers, and object hierarchy are normally lost. Apply required modifiers and preserve a copy of the original 3DS file before exporting.
  • Scale and axes: 3DS files may lack reliable unit information and may use different axis conventions. Check dimensions and orientation after import, then apply the required transforms before export.
  • Mesh validity: Non-manifold faces, duplicate vertices, missing normals, unsupported polygons, and disconnected components can produce unexpected output. Repair these issues before conversion when the destination requires a valid watertight mesh.
  • Multiple objects: Legacy 3DS limits can split a model into several mesh objects. Export every required object, or join them first if the destination expects one mesh; joining can change object boundaries and material assignments.
  • Point-cloud compatibility: PLY supports both point sets and polygon meshes, but applications may expect a specific element type and property layout. Confirm whether the destination requires faces, normals, RGB colors, or scanner-specific fields.
